MARTIN MAJIER GAI (1940–1993) By Chol Michael Maker Friday, 5 June 2026 Martin Majier Gai was among the most distinguished scholars, jurists and political thinkers produced by Southern Sudan in the twentieth century. His life was characterised by academic excellence, intellectual leadership, public service and a deep commitment to the struggle for freedom, justice and self-determination. In 1963, while in his first year at the University of Khartoum, he achieved national distinction in an English Literature Competition by submitting the best essay and attaining the highest score among all participants in Sudan. His exceptional performance earned him national recognition and established him as one of the brightest students of his generation. In recognition of this remarkable achievement, he was invited by the American Ambassador in Khartoum to visit Washington, D.C., as a special guest, reflecting the international recognition accorded to his academic excellence and intellectual promise. Following his success in the competition, Martin Majier Gai continued his studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Khartoum, graduating with distinction in 1967. This achievement further cemented his reputation as one of the pioneering intellectuals of Southern Sudan. Upon completing his legal studies, he joined the Sudanese judiciary and served with distinction as a judge in various towns and regions across Sudan, later earning recognition as Justice Martin Majier Gai. His legal acumen, integrity and commitment to justice earned him the respect of both colleagues and the communities he served. Through his work on the bench, he contributed significantly to the administration of justice during a critical period in Sudan’s history. Driven by a desire to serve his people more directly, he later entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament representing his constituency in Bor District, then part of Jonglei Province in the Upper Nile Region. In Parliament, he became known for his intellect, principled leadership and steadfast dedication to the aspirations of the people he represented. Beyond his achievements in law and politics, Martin Majier Gai played a pivotal role in the history of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). He was one of the seven members of the SPLM/A Politico-Military High Command, the supreme leadership body that guided the Movement during its formative years. His contribution to the intellectual and organisational foundations of the liberation struggle was profound and enduring. He was the principal author of the SPLM/A Penal and Disciplinary Code, a foundational document that established standards of discipline, accountability and organisational conduct within the Movement. He also played a leading role in drafting the SPLM/A Manifesto, which articulated the political vision and objectives of the liberation struggle. At the inception of the Movement in 1983, Martin Majier Gai and Comrade Joseph Oduho were the only two civilians within the highest echelon of the SPLM/A leadership. Their presence brought intellectual depth, political experience and strategic vision to a leadership structure otherwise dominated by military commanders. Throughout his life, Justice Martin Majier Gai remained committed to the liberation of his people. He devoted his intellect, experience and leadership to the cause of freedom and justice. Ultimately, he made the ultimate sacrifice, dying as a hero of the liberation struggle and leaving behind a legacy of courage, patriotism and service. Justice Martin Majier Gai’s life remains a lasting example of the value of education, justice, leadership and national service. His contributions as a scholar, judge, parliamentarian, revolutionary leader and patriot occupy a distinguished place in the history of South Sudan. “A pioneering scholar. A respected jurist. A principled statesman. A founding intellectual of the liberation struggle. His legacy endures.” To be cont.

🚨🗣️ Pierluigi Collina (former Italian referee) on Manchester United’s historic comeback against Bayern Munich in the 1999 UCL final: “It was the last two minutes, I saw the Bayern players on the bench preparing to celebrate the title. Suddenly, Manchester United scored two goals in two minutes and reversed the score. At that moment, I saw the true face of football — death and life in one stadium. People celebrating madly and people desperate to death. That night also taught me something about Manchester United: never celebrate too early against them. Until the final whistle, they always believe. Since then, for me, United became the perfect example of mentality, mentality that made them the biggest club in the world.”

This is pretty painful. Civilians don’t have to go through this.
A humanitarian crisis unfolding in Akobo County, #SouthSudan. Over 112,000 people have been displaced and catastrophic hunger is spreading fast. Encouraging to see the first @WFP airdrop delivered today as humanitarians scale up life-saving assistance.

The case of Senegal is starting to look very familiar to what happened in Juba in 2013. This is exactly what happens when revolutionary leaders also want to become agents of rapid change overnight. Revolution is one thing; governance is another full-time job with no holiday allowance. It is much easier to rally people against a system than it is to govern them after the collapse of that system. During the struggle, everybody is united by anger and slogans. After victory, suddenly people want roads, jobs, electricity, IMF on your rear with advisories, loan negotiations and so on. The excitement of their liberation is eventually colliding with the harsh realities of state-building. If Senegalese are not careful, they may also discover that bringing down the old house is easier than agreeing on how to build the new one without everybody fighting over the cement. x.com/amadou_at_tijan/status…

I think sometimes we take our jokes about tech a bit too far. First, the President shouldn’t even be involved in such low-level operational stuff. Second, why launch a website as if it is the achievement in itself? A website is just one small component of a much bigger digital communications ecosystem. If I were the architect of this, I would have undertaken a full-scale digital communications strategy overhaul for the presidency, talk of website, social media architecture, content creation systems, digital archives, media response structures, analytics, security, all packaged together properly. Then lay out clear milestones and KPIs to measure impact and effectiveness to actually improve communication and public access instead of becoming another cosmetic cellotape exercise.
The office of the President on Wednesday launched a presidential website for the first time since independence in an event graced by President Salva Kiir Mayardit. #ssox eyeradio.org/kiir-launches-p…
