When a crow dies, other crows often hold what people call a “funeral”: they gather around the body to investigate what happened. Researchers, including teams from the University of Washington, have documented this behavior—known as crow thanatology. Rather than mourning, the crows are assessing risk. They study the scene to identify potential threats (such as predators or poisons), learn which locations or situations are dangerous, and share that knowledge with the rest of their group, improving the flock’s chances of survival.
