Hello all, the remainder of 2021 will go towards preparing the Hiragana Yokai Flashcards for the printer in preparation for a Kickstarter in January. If you're interested, the best place for updates will be my newsletter which you can sign-up for here: gatelessgatestudio.com/newsl…

Hello all, here are some samples from the completed set of yokai-themed Hiragana flashcards. I was inspired by my daughter's Japanese studies and my interest in Japan's monsters, ghouls, and spirits. You can also see the entire set here: youtu.be/1Fyk2M3C6pg

Some of my favorite additions to the yokai-themed Hiragana flashcards came about this weekend. ゆ(Yu) is for the ghost Yūrei. え(E) is for the ruler of hell Enma Daiō. せ(Se) is for the great dragon Seiryū. て(Te) is for Tengu.

Here are the newest editions to the hand-stamped yokai-themed Hiragana flashcards. It's an October project inspired by my daughter's Japanese studies. I'm almost halfway through the set of 46 characters. #hiragana #nihongo #yokai #ayokaiaday

I am starting to run into characters that I can't find a yokai to coincide with. Would anyone have any ideas for the following characters? if not a yokai, maybe a spooky, mysterious, or atmospheric word? り / Ri る / Ru

This week I added five new flashcards to my yokai-themed Hiragana deck. Included are spirits of the dead known as Hitodama. Shape-shifting foxes called Kitsune. The vampires seductresses Nikusui. Kings of the trash heap Chirizuka kaiō. And Guardian lion Shisa. #ayokaiaday

I added four new yokai themed Hiragana flashcards to my deck today. The full 46 Hiragana characters feel like a ways away, but I'm excited about the progress made so far: わ / wa / Wani い / i/ Isogashi ら / ra / Raiju や / ya / Yamajijii #hiragana #yokai #ayokaiaday

My oldest daughter is three weeks into her first Japanese class, and it's October, which has me daydreaming of spooks and monsters. So I started a set of yokai Hiragana flashcards for her. あ / a / Appossha か / ka / Kagge onna さ / sa / Sarugami た / ta / Tanuki #ayokaiaday

Everything is packaged and ready to get in the mail for patrons. The fire lookout atop Desolation Peak as described in the final chapters of The Dharma Bums was a primary inspiration in both the monthly and seasonal print.

I LOVED read along books and records.... I found a site that has them uploaded for a happy memory. readalongadventures.com/blog… Still can't believe this was aimed at kids and I believe created the PG13 rating!

One of the first prints for a November calendar, inspired by the main entrance of a temple called Sogenji in Okayama, Japan. It's also my first two-color calendar as I continue to experiment with Schmincke ink. A handful of these will go to my Etsy shop on the first of October.

It's been a full weekend of printing as I wrap up this month's focus on the novel The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac. Those at the seasonal tier will be receiving this exploration of an alternative book cover, completed as a three-color linoleum block print. #thedharmabums

This is a super rough test print after carving the last block this morning. Time to clean up, maybe play with some color variations and start preparing for the final prints. #thedharmabums #jackkerouac #blockprinting #linocut #linoprint #patreon

These are test prints of two out of the three layers for the Dharma Bums print. The last layer is not yet carved and is an essential part of the final, but today's tests give me confidence that it's going in the right direction.

Last October, I completed a daily block print depicting a parade of creatures from Japanese folklore, who occasionally gather for a night procession known as Hyakki Yagyō. I'm considering searching out that parade again this October. youtu.be/EVsVCxd74t8

Here’s all the blocks, all ready to share a yokai parade.

I've decided for this months Patreon print will focus on the fire lookout at Desolation Peak in the Washington Cascades. In the book's final chapters of The Dharma Bums, Jack Kerouac describes his experiences there as a fire lookout in the summer of 1956.
