Actually, it wasn’t an American military officer who said this, but a British one: Lord Ismay, NATO’s first Secretary General. That said, it’s telling that Scholz’s conception of European geopolitics remains frozen in the mid-20th century: the immediate post-WW2 & early Cold War.

Claiming, as Mark Carney did, that a new global order can be rebuilt from Europe is deeply myopic. The Ukraine proxy war has exposed a longstanding reality: Europe is exiting history. The once-noble vision of European pan-continentalism was sacrificed on the altar of Atlanticism.

Since when has refusing diplomatic engagement & denying the objective realities on the battlefield come to be regarded as "courageous"? Since when did diplomacy itself become equated with "humiliation"?
We are tragically living in intellectually & ethically impoverished times.

Russia does not want to engage in any kind of dialogue. We should not humiliate ourselves by saying, "please, we beg you to talk to us."
Instead, we should put them in a position where they move from pretending to negotiate to actually negotiating.
