Tracking and chasing severe weather worldwide with focus on Germany. Also conducting on-site tornado damage surveys for torkud.de. Travelling Australia.
Introducing: the TorKUD Data Viewer. This outstanding work by @wxhendr is now publicly accessible and presents track data and survey results from @TorKUDde for tornadoes examined since 2015.

that's got to be the highest EHI I've ever seen from the GFS for Germany. The models, particularly the GFS, have been indicating for several runs now that something is in the works for the weekend and the start of next week.
A very unstable but weakly sheared airmass will be ejected into Germany & BeNeLux towards the weekend, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms expected. Interestingly, GFS & Euro are hinting that a shortwave could be approaching towards Monday, yielding much better shear profiles.
Supercell producing a tornado in the suburbs of Cologne as seen from my house on 24 July 2023. Only the wallcloud was visible to me, since the tornado was hiding behind trees and the surging RFD, which then went on to cause SLW damage as the storm moved into downtown.
99 years ago today, a devastating tornado outbreak impacted Germany, Belgium and NL. Among numerous strong to violent tornadoes, an IF5 struck Neede, NL. In Germany, two IF4s, ongoing at the same time, caused catastrophic damage in the towns of Lingen and Auen-Holthaus
The June 1st, 1927 event was on a similar level as the infamous 1967 tornado outbreak. With the population density having grown much higher since, an outbreak like this today would be nothing short of catastrophic.
There is one tornado scar that beats them all.
It happened in Krasnoyarsk, Krai, USSR, sometime in the summer of 1965.
Moving ESE through a forest, the scar of this titanic tornado alone was more than 2 MILES WIDE in some places, averaging 1.5 miles wide.

We KNOW brick houses will stop this.
F4 tornado btw

This photo is from the 2021 South Moravia tornado rated IF4. It resulted in 6 deaths and damaged more than 1200 buildings with many later demolished. Some sturdy brick houses experienced wall collapses. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Sout…essl.org/cms/wp-content…
In light of the recent debate about tornado impacts in Europe vs the US, I wanted to share some of the damage caused by the Hautmont, France tornado of 2008, which was rated IF4. Buildings CANNOT withstand upper-echelon tornadoes, no matter the continent.

They're very faint, but I captured red sprites for the first time last night! These were coming from large thunderstorms over Wales, approximately 150 miles away. The waxing gibbous moon to the west was almost certainly drowning them out a bit but I'm still super chuffed 😁
1 year ago, on May 23, together with @GerWeather, I saw my first tornado ever, as well as the best supercell I have ever seen near Kit Carson, Colorado
On May 24, 2010, a major severe weather outbreak hit Poland and eastern Germany. One long-lived supercell in particular spawned a series of tornadoes and destructive downbursts. At 3:40 pm, a rainwrapped wedge IF3 tornado struck the town of Großenhain, sadly claiming one life.
May 21, 2011:
An intense tornado tore through Reading, Kansas. The EF3 swept a single-story home off its foundation and heavily damaged numerous other residences in the community. One person was killed and five were injured along the twister's 10.11-mile path.

/LD

Impressive footage showing the Paderborn tornado of 2022 as it was reaching peak intensity, passing dangerously close to a person filming from their car. The vehicle is then impacted by powerful inflow winds and flying debris. youtube.com/shorts/aQwc9ayxo…
Slowly but surely, storm season in Germany is picking up the pace, with some large hail and severe wind events over the past month. Despite this, as of May 11th, no tornadoes have been confirmed. That is quite anomalous; the latest start to a tornado season since at least 2010.
Hot take: Given the incredibly small timeframe which we have reliable data from, I doubt we actually know the true ceiling of tornado events on planet earth. 2011 and 1974 might not even be ‘Super Outbreaks‘.
Given the background environment, observed damage, and forward speed of the tornadoes, the tornadoes on 4/27 were likely the most violent storms possible on planet earth.
Watch this classic supercell produce an intense tornado, but struggle to maintain it upon engulfing itself in rain
Precipitation production directly interferes with textbook supercell dynamics and tornadoes.
