#Switzerland #G7 I am deeply concerned regarding the alarming series of heavy-handed measures and official narratives in Geneva ahead of the G7 meetings. @swiss_un @GenevePolice @GE_chancellerie @UNGeneva 1/

#Switzerland #G7 I urge the authorities to immediately restore public water access, ease arbitrary street checks, and ensure that those wishing to voice their concerns during this global summit can do so safely and free from intimidation. 9/

#Switzerland #G7 I am actively monitoring the situation, including today's movilizations. I call on the Swiss Government and Geneva authorities to fulfill its binding international obligations to respect, protect, and actively facilitate the right to protest.

⚽️ Preventing a Goal Against Rights and Freedoms! 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇲🇽 As Canada, the US, and Mexico host the #WorldCup, global eyes are on the soccer field—and on their commitments to human rights. Mega-sporting events can NEVER be a license to suspend fundamental freedoms. 👇 (1/5)

1/3 #Syria| I'm alarmed by Syria's new Interior Ministry Circular requiring prior authorisation for assemblies. This framework risks making spontaneous protests unlawful and turning a fundamental right into a government-granted privilege. #HumanRights #FreedomOfAssembly

2/3 #Syria| The Circular requires a registered "committee" before filing for permission, with assemblies deemed approved if authorities don't respond within 5 days. Conditioning the right to assemble on prior organisation and tacit state approval is contrary to Article 21 ICCPR.

3/3 #Syria| Civil society members involved in organising an unregistered assembly under this Circular have faced repeated arrest and detention, even after release. I urge Syrian authorities to repeal or revise this Circular and ensure no reprisals for exercising this right.

📣 People have an absolute right to protest against the #WorldCup itself, or to use this global media window to elevate long-neglected struggles, like movements in Mex around disappearances, labor rights & education. The spotlight belongs to the people even in mass events (4/5)

🛡️ Police forces in the three host countries have a positive duty to facilitate protest, not restrict it. No militarized tactics, no unlawful kettling. Minorities & unhoused populations must be protected from over-policing, and teams and players from discrimination (5/5)

#UK Deeply concerned by the ongoing unrest in Belfast. We need immediate de-escalation, the protection of vulnerable groups, and defuse online hate. While peaceful protests can address controversial issues, incitement of violence is not protected by HHRR standards.
