Giunta Lab of Genome Evolution @ University of Rome Sapienza. We study human centromeres' tug-of-war between fast evolution & essential function. AIRC funded.
What is the molecular basis for maintaining centromere size and position? In a great collaboration with @NAltemose@GiuntaLab and @FachinettiLab labs, we investigate the long standing question of how heterochromatin maintains centromere size/position! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
I am starting a new video series called WAY COOL GENOMICS! Join me as I showcase examples where genomics is used in a study that is important, impactful, – and just plain WAY COOL!
ERC-funded positions now open❗️❕❗️

Dear community, we are very happy to announce the next Giin webinar!! Don't miss it on Tuesday, April 9th, from 5PM Rome (11AM NYC), with Stephen Jackson @SPJacksonGroup and Simona Giunta @Simona_Giunta. Zoom link: uniroma1.zoom.us/j/951499844…
🧬Complete Human Diploid Genome Alert❗️
So proud to share our first work as @GiuntaLab now on bioRvix - a monumental feat for a single lab assembling T2T RPE1 as a new reference to achieve epigenetic precision:
It's not just the length but how you use it!😊biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
What have we been doing since starting the lab in 2021? Assembling human genomes & studying their centromeres at basepair resolution. A new era of epigenomic is here! Check out our first work on preprint, constructive feedback wlecome 🧬🧫❣️NB.This work is supported by @AIRC_it

2015: @Simona_Giunta first imaged human centromere DNA after CenCOFISH in @HironoriFunabi1 Lab @RockefellerUni
2018-21: Presented at conferences the peculiar centromere ring structures
2021-23: Elena in the @GiuntaLab finally made the project blossom molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/…🧵1/4
We found that the ring-like organization of alpha-satellite DNA at the mitotic centromere is present also under tension, even past metaphase. Pavan in @HironoriFunabi1 Lab showed CENP-A follows a similar organization by #ExMmolbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/…🧵3/4
We brought together our data with those from too many labs to tag, and we propose the LAYERED LOOPING MODEL of #centromere#DNA organization to favor CENP-A positioning toward the kinetochore-microtubule binding interface. We are excited to showcase this & welcome feedback!🧵4/4
Excited to share our recent work on KaryoCreate, a new method to engineer chromosome-specific gains and losses in human cells with @SteSantaguida and @GiuntaLabcell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674… Check out also recent similar and complementary work by @LensSusanne and @McClellandLab!
