Today, surrounded by people in recovery and those affected by addiction, our government introduced Bill 53, the Compassionate Intervention Act. There is nothing more important to families affected by addiction than to have the tools they need to support their loved ones with treatment and recovery. This proposed legislation will make it possible for an adult family member, parent, guardian, healthcare professional, police or peace officer to request a treatment order for those whose addiction or substance use has made them a danger to themselves or others. As I have said before, there is nothing compassionate about leaving someone in their addiction. We must intervene and support them with treatment, recovery, and a second lease on life.
