FACT CHECK:
The claim that
#KamalaHarris “locked up 1,500 Black men” is not supported by the evidence.
Here’s what the data actually shows:
• During her time as
#SanFrancisco #DistrictAttorney, there were about 1,956 marijuana convictions. That number includes ALL defendants and ALL
#marijuana convictions—not just Black men.
• An investigation found that only 45 people were sentenced to state prison for marijuana-related offenses during that period.
• Public records do not identify the race of those individuals.
• Former officials from Harris’s office said their policy generally sought to avoid jail time for simple marijuana possession cases.
Why the claim is misleading:
The 1,500 number refers to total marijuana convictions, not Black men.
A conviction is not the same as incarceration.
There is no evidence showing that 1,500
#Blackmen were imprisoned as a result of those cases.
Kamala Harris’s prosecutorial record remains debated and controversial, but the specific claim that she “locked up 1,500 Black men” is not supported by the available evidence.
