There have been renewed calls for a dedicated Garda animal crime unit after footage emerged of sulky horse‑cart racing on the N7 between Limerick and Dublin. The video, taken last Saturday, shows a convoy of cars following racing horses pulling sulkies on the N7 near Naas. The charity My Lovely Horse Rescue posted another video filmed last Sunday, in which a horse is seen collapsing before being “dragged back up and forced to keep going”. Gentle, kind, and trusting, her soft beautiful eyes say more than words ever could. 💔💔💔😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 HOW MANY MORE TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SEE THIS BEFORE SOMETHING FINALLY CHANGES??? 😡😡😡 This evening in Clonmel, people sat in their cars, helpless, horrified, watching a horse collapse on a public road, a trap/sulky still attached. An animal pushed beyond its limits, then dragged back up and forced to keep going as if its suffering meant nothing. This isn’t just neglect. This is cruelty, in plain sight, in modern Ireland. And yet it keeps happening. 😡 This happened at the roundabout at the Bulmers Factory, Clonmel, Tipperary 💔💔😡😡 We are angry. We are heartbroken. We are ashamed that in a country that claims to value animal welfare, this is still allowed to continue on our roads. Laws mean nothing without enforcement. Words mean nothing without action. To those in power: how many videos, how many witnesses, how many broken or dead animals will it take before you act? We are calling for: A dedicated An Garda Síochána Animal Crime Unit with real authority and resources. 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐓𝐘‼️ The Vale of Taunton and Banwell Harriers huntsman, Wayne Greggory pleaded 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐓𝐘 this morning in Taunton magistrate’s court, to hunting a wild animal with dogs, contrary to Section 1, The Hunting Act 2005. He was fined £250, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £100, and £85 court costs. The illegal hunt was filmed on Somerset Sabs drone last November at a meet in Chilton Trinity, near Bridgwater, Somerset. Well done to all those involved in securing the conviction, Somerset Sabs and Avon and Somerset Police. If you’d like to have your say on so-called “trail hunting” please complete the consultation.
