Deborah Matshoba (1950 β 2014) was a South African anti-apartheid activist, a leading figure in the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM). During the 1976 Soweto Uprisings, she was arrested under the Suppression of Communism Act and detained at the Old Fort prison in Johannesburg alongside Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Following her initial release, she was quickly re-arrested under Section 6 of the Terrorism Act, enduring 18 months in solitary confinement. She was subjected to severe psychological and physical torture. Police manacled her ankle to a heavy iron ball, forced her to stand for consecutive nights, and severely beat her when she refused to change her written statement. Source: SAHO, SABC.
