In 2022, we began a project with an ambitious goal- simulate the effects of climate change in the cloud forest by removing epiphytes from entire trees. I am so excited to see this, our first product, in print! It sure took a village!

My students in Tree Biology are learning about wood structure and function. This white oak core shows large, early-season vessels that move more water when it is abundant and late-season vessels (tiny) that move less water but withstand drought.

It was great to participate in this multimedia project for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences! The cloud forest is a critical ecosystem for hydrology and biodiversity but doesn't nearly get the press it deserves.

UK's Forest Ecophysiology Lab is representing at the North American Forest Ecology Workshop. I am so proud of these ladies on their first conference presentations! They both knocked it out of the park!

Thanks to the landowners, the arborist supply companies and the National Science Foundation for supporting this research!

After a year and four months of discussions, prepping, collecting pilot data, and constructing preliminary models, I am happy to say, proposal submitted! Fingers crossed. Back to the trees.
Dawn in the cloud forest. I am in Monteverde, Costa Rica, for a couple of weeks to work with my field team and support two film crews that will be documenting our research project. Stay tuned! @ukyfnr @UKAgriculture#forestry#canopyscience#climatechangeresearch
Job alert- Biological Science Technician position is open with the Forest Service doing forest pathology, based right here at U Kentucky! Work with Dr. Tyler Dreaden & the Forest Health Research Education Center (& me!) on a range of exciting projects usajobs.gov/job/704298300
And now we have begun a photosynthesis campaign. So curious to see how these cloud forest trees will respond to the loss of epiphytes. Check out the climber in the upper left. @UKAgriculture
Our tree architecture campaign continues. We are taking these measurements to understand factors influencing epiphyte colonization, following removal. My crew's climbing skills are being pushed to the next level! @UKAgriculture
