A nearby South African braai restaurant has introduced a new burger which the menu tells me is made from “wild boer”. That seems rather cruel to Afrikaners to me.
I realise that having been a pharmacist and then getting ordained is unusual, but the predictive text on my computer is still struggling. Today I typed "Stations of the Cross" and it asked if I meant "statins of the Cross".
Q for clergy. I need a policy or procedure to support safe lone working in church and another for safe home visits. Before I write one does anyone have one that they’re prepared to share? We’re rural rather than urban so the risks may be different.
Sitting inside a McDonald’s with my granddaughters attempting to use the app. Apparently the nearest branch is 65 miles away and when I attempted to use the special offer the app switched off. Grrr.
Attended a fascinating talk on potholes and their repair last night. Interesting that the system of fining councils for not getting repairs under way in 38 days militates against doing a proper repair instead of patching. Also respect for crews wearing fireproof suits in heat.
Perhaps a telling moment. I have a regular meeting on a 4th Tuesday. I pointed out that it would clash with England v Ghana at the World Cup, and nobody in the room was planning to watch the World Cup.
As is traditional half term starts with ninety minutes of soft play, the girls being impervious to heat when they want to do something. However, twenty minutes in an air-conditioned supermarket is out of the question.
Final day of curacy and it’s a full one. A baptism at 9.30 and a Eucharist 3 miles away at 11. Then this afternoon it’s hospitality Sunday in the village - free afternoon tea for all so you can come and meet new people.
Reading some local parish council minutes this morning, I can't help noticing that they seem, if the minutes are correct, to have voted to give £200 million to a local community project. I suspect, though, that the m in £200m is a misprint.
A couple of women at the table behind me are having quite a loud chat. One said she’s off on holiday on Saturday. “France again?” said her friend. “No, we don’t go to France any more. Too many Muslims.” “Yeah, I get that. So where you going then?”
“Morocco”.
Don't know what the weather is like where you are, but it's a scorcher here. Just the evening for a cassock - amice - alb combo and a lot of candles....
My grandmother died 46 years ago but she'd have loved tonight. She'd have stood ready with a big pot of Brylcreem and loitered by the door with a hankie ready to spit on it and polish my cheeks.
I don't know how many times I've attended a BCP Holy Communion, but today is the first time I've presided at one. Reading it through, you realise all the things you never noticed - little things like when the priest moves from the chair to the altar. Let's see how it goes!
How sad to hear that Nathalie Baye has died (and that she was 77). She starred in one of my favourite films, La Balance, in which she and Philippe Leotard played villains who were nevertheless sympathetic characters.
