Where VC money goes in this space often seems very out of line with what clubs actual needs and long-term roadmaps look like.

So, so many companies coming into the data viz / scouting software space at the moment. Lots heavily backed. I just don't see where the customer base is to justify the investment.

Happy to share the latest instalment of the podcast, a great chat with @GregorydSam, the current Director of Analytics for US Soccer.
Sam is fairly new to this role but is in the process of building out a strong analytics department and has a wealth of experience with previous roles at Inter Miami, a Canadian Premier League team, as well as a couple of tech/data companies.
Before that all came about, Sam was also another analyst that leveraged an online portfolio and presence to leverage a transition from his economic background.
He talks around
- building out a department
- building tools
- relationships with different personnel
- Areas of interest in analytics
- Plus plenty of advice!
Really enjoyed this. Not only is Sam super knowledgable, he's seems open to help others and so it was a pleasure to speak with him.

Mark was one of the people who embraced data the most at the club and challenged us to improve when the data wasn't giving us what we needed.
I learned so much from working with him and sure he will be a huge asset to where ever he ends up next!
