My own contributions to the many beautiful photos of the Brixham Grey Phalarope today. A ‘lifer’ for me. Very glad it hung around long enough for me to get back with the kids and drag them out in the rain to see it 😂 Also a few GNDs about - including one in near summer plumage!

1) A rare, remarkable event. In the sea surface from at least Dartmouth in S Devon to Portheras in N Cornwall, UK, our planktonic relative (it's a chordate) the salp Salpa fusiformis is blooming. If this was a bloom of animals on land it would be NEWS and we (see 2) @zeiss_micro

This is just a snapshot of the number of insects that have been seen feeding on the knapweed at Berry Head! Knapweed is a huge favourite with all types of butterflies and other pollinators too. #knapweed #berryhead #pollinators x.com/TorCoastCountry/status…

If you'd like a takeaway from the guardhouse please think ahead and bring your cup! Otherwise for takeaway cups we add a 10p charge which we give to environmental charities (£300 so far this year).
At King’s Cross, everyone drinking their morning coffee, not a single person using a reusable cup. 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels & most compostable packaging won’t be composted by industry. If we all changed this small habit it would make a huge difference. 🙏🌎💚

Here are two of the orchids that grow at Berry Head - the pyramidal orchid & bee orchid. Both are popular with insects. The bee orchid, in particular, cleverly mimics a bee, both in scent & appearance, to attract other bees, which in turn helps to pollinate the flower.

A female GPS-tracked falcon flew from South Africa to Finland. In 42 days she flew over 10,000 km. That's 230 km per day. What have you achieved in the last 42 days? Source: buff.ly/3ArE2eq
Community note
This is not a falcon, but a European honey buzzard named "Päivi." The map shows her migration from South Africa to Finland April 15-June 1, 2015. Päivi received her transmitter at her nest in Vesilahti, Finland on August 13, 2013, and was last tracked in May 2019. luomus.fi/en/satellite-h… satelliitti.laji.fi/?lang=en&id=JX…
