How do you say “0.68”? Does it matter for learning? We taught 5th & 6th graders to use either decomposed labels (six tenths and eight hundredths), common-unit labels (sixty-eight hundredths), or point labels (point six eight). @_TIANJing @Ren_Kexin doi.org/10.1016/j.appdev.202… (1/x)

... and reduced incorrect reliance on the hundredths digit for comparisons (e.g., incorrectly saying that 0.39 is more than 0.74 because 9 is greater than 4). (4/x)

Overall, the results highlight the importance of language in math learning, and suggest that decomposed labels and common-unit labels may be beneficial for teaching different aspects of decimal magnitude knowledge.

New paper! @GraceBennettPi and I review how knitting, crochet, and other fiber arts relate to spatial skills, gender, and motivation. link.springer.com/article/10… (1/4)

We suggest that engaging in fiber arts might be an effective means of improving spatial skills. This is notable because fiber arts are stereotypically feminine, in contrast to the male-gender-typing of many spatial activities like block and Lego construction. (3/4)

Finally, fiber arts are typically intrinsically motivating, and may encourage viewing failure as an opportunity for learning. Altogether, this can open new avenues into our understanding of spatial cognition and interventions to enhance spatial skills and motivation! (4/4)

New paper from our lab! Spatial skills in 4th grade longitudinally predict students' STEM major choice and help explain gender differences. Math self-concept is a major mediator. @_TIANJing led the study and explains it better than I could below. doi.org/10.1111/desc.13302

Replying to @_TIANJing
Despite the tremendous progress women have made in education and the workforce over the past 50 years, men continue to dominate STEM domains. Why do fewer women than men pursue STEM fields in college and beyond?
