ALT A copper alloy bowl with an adorable, cartoon-like decorative ox head escutcheon on the rim. The ox has curving horns with round caps on the ends, little ears that poke out the side of its head, large round hollow eyes and matching nostrils, with the handle protruding from its mount and curving back down to the bowlβs body. The bowl is still covered in mud and packed with cling film and blue tissue.
ALT Another shot of the ox head escutcheon from a different angle. You can see the tilted nostrils and upturned snout more clearly.
ALT Side view of the ox head escutcheon. You can clearly see the curvature of the face and the round cheeks of the ox and the handle that protrudes from its mouth and chin forming a perfect loop. You can also see the twisting detail of the horns.

Departed comrade! Thou, redeemed from pain
Shall sleep the sleep that kings desire in vain...
All pain is fled from thee.
And we are weeping in thy stead;
Tears for the mourners who are left behind
Peace everlasting for the quiet dead.
Lucretius, Roman Poet

A rare example of a painted mosaic from Sparsholt #Roman villa #Hampshire, now in @WinchCityMuseum
This section of plaster may originally have continued a floor mosaic guilloche design up onto the surrounding walls

The tombstone of Euthenia, who died at the age of 35. The stone was dedicated by Gemellus, described as her 'partner' (contuburnalis) rather than her husband. This form of union, along with their single names, suggests that both Euthenia & Gemellus were enslaved #EpigraphyTuesday
It is with great sadness that we share news of our dear friend Tim Darvill, professor of archaeology at Bournemouth University who passed away this morning
Our thoughts are with his wife, family, friends and all those he inspired
"If someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, I shall gladly change. I seek the truth, which never harmed anyone: the harm is to persist in one's own self-deception and ignorance."

In Britain, fragments of at least 30 stone tabletops have been found. Concentrated in the Southwest, the tables are usually discovered in villas and town sites. Rockbourne is special for drawn circles and sections of circles on top. #FindsFriday#FurnitureFriday#RomanBritain
