Today in 1896 the Halifax Fire Department reported the following equipment in its inventory:
5 steam fire engine (4 Amoskeag, 1 Cole Bros.)
2 chemical fire engines (1 Babcock, 1 Holloway)
9 hose waggons
2 ladder trucks
1 ladder sleigh
10,000 feet of hose

1891 – With new housing needed for the expanding hook and ladder companies, a station to cover the South End was required. The location chosen was on Grafton, near Blowers, (the building was, until a recent fire, occupied by The Stubborn Goat restaurant).
Housing four horses with which to pull No1 Truck and No1 Sleigh during the winter months meant that the Union Axe Company could transport their many ladders ranging in size from a 26’ regular ladder to a 50’ Bangor style ladder along with many sizes in between.
