with folks using less paper, we will have fewer tangible items like this to hand down as a reminder of who people were not the same to hand down your grub hub receipts or your outlook calendar
A few years ago, I found some of my mom’s menu plans from around 1980 in an old steno pad. She cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner for my father daily. As they got older, he would take her out on Saturday nights for dinner and a movie… religiously.

homemade biscuits this morning for breakfast—the dough for biscuits should be lightly handled as it can quickly become tough if you knead it too much etc

I was once asked by a female academic leader why there was a 10 yr gap in academic output on my CV I said that the “gap” was where the most important work of my life happened—having 4 boys in 5 years and then helping to keep them alive my only regret is not having more children
Children derail academic careers even in places with good social nets, like Denmark

I remember when the boys were babies as night approached and everyone else seemed to be going to bed, sometimes I would fill with dread as I knew I’d be up all night with the babies and it felt somewhat lonely. had I known about these sisters praying I wouldn’t have felt so alone
eyes filled with tears over this

had a chance to meet our new Dean today at @UMichMedSchool — he has some great historical artifacts in his office like this portable EKG machine from the last century and a program from the 1924 @UMich commencement

if you aren’t vigilant you can come out of med school a worse human being —as the traits that are selected for in the process (hyper-efficiency, a tough outer shell, ability to hyper-compartmentalize etc) are not the traits that make you a good spouse, patient parent etc
Medical school doesn't just teach medicine, it completely changes your personality, your friendships and how you see life.

this is what true generational wealth looks like
My grandparents prayed for 30 years that they’d live to see all their grandchildren get married. Tonight they went 9-for-9.

From calling your baby “little nugget” to an “it” not worth living because of Down Syndrome, is something my brain cannot comprehend.
