Run this combine often, compare your number to the benchmarks below, and you'll know exactly where your putting stands.
How it works:
Putt from nine distances. From each one, keep going until you hole out. Count every stroke. Do the whole thing twice for 18 total "holes."
The nine distances:
3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, and 42 feet.
No tape measure needed. Just pace it off (one step = 3 feet). Practice your step against a tape measure a few times first so it's dialed.
In steps, that's 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14.
Two ways to run it:
1⃣Sequential. Start at 3ft, work back to 42ft, repeat.
2⃣Random (better). Mix the distances up every round.
The part most people skip: go through your full routine on every putt, same as you would on the course. If you can, putt to different holes during the combine so you're reading new breaks and speeds. Then add up your total putts across all 18 holes.
The benchmarks (total putts over 18 holes):
0 index▶️32.1 putts
5 index▶️33.1
10 index▶️33.9
15 index▶️34.7
20 index▶️35.4
Here's how to read it. Say you want to compare yourself to a 15 index and you took 34 putts. You just gained 0.7 strokes against a 15 index. If you took 35 putts you would have lost 0.3 strokes.
One run won't tell you much. The value is doing this on a regular basis. Same test, same distances. Track it.
