👊The Little Tube That Pushed the Bands Higher
Before the black box, there was the tube.
🛑From the W6SL Memorial Ham Radio Magazine Collection: an RCA electron tube ad from the early Cold War radio age.
“17 watts input…to 175 Mc!”
▶️That line carried folklore. A thumb-sized tube. A homebrew bench. A ham chasing higher bands while America’s technical culture raced upward into radar, VHF, military communications, and the coming space age.
▶️The RCA-5763 was sold as small but mighty: RF amplifier, multiplier, oscillator, VHF driver.
▶️This was amateur radio when parts had personalities and operators knew their stations from the socket up.
▶️W6SL’s QSL cards show where the signal went.
▶️These magazines show the world that made the signal possible.
This is not nostalgia.
This is recovery.
