Brilliant
My sustainability class just finished a module about disinformation. I had them write me a letter assuming they were flunking and arguing that they deserve an A, using the techniques of disinformation we discussed, like cherry picking, false experts and ad hominem. HOO-boy. 1/n

So we’ll said. I wrestle with this often.
This is a thoughtful essay. And this is the clincher: “Arguments about what content should be included in high school mathematics fail to acknowledge the elephant in the room: We haven’t yet figured out how to teach the concepts of algebra well to most students.”

So much to discuss here. Makes me wish I was still teaching statistics.

Chaos game and Sierpinski: 1. Take a random point inside of an equilateral triangle. 2. Find the midpoint between it and a random vertex. 3. Plot this point. 3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 using this new point. The result is quite interesting. 1st pick: 100 points, 2nd pick: 10000

Had a conversation with some students studying hyperbolic geometry yesterday. Me: How is it going? S: Our team watched a video and understood about 5%. Me: Hm. Ok… S: But each 5% was different, so I think we’ll be ok.

Had Geo students chart their “Math Story” and analyze using algebra. A favorite quote: “Although my math journey looks very negative and rough,…the harder I work, the more my interest level will rise and vice versa.”
