VIDEO | Former India captain Anjum Chopra highlighted that Indian World Cup-winning captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who is leading the side in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup, is enjoying great success and commands unprecedented respect from her peers; the team happily follows her lead in whichever direction she guides them.
"Harmanpreetย is a good leader. She commands great respect in that dressing room. She walks tall in the dressing room because of her own performances. The team backs her.ย She is the leader of that team. And when I say that she is the leader of the team, she leads them in whichever direction they need to be led. And everyone happily follows her lead.ย She commands that kind of respect. And for any leader who commands that kind of respect, it is a great thing to happen.ย
"For Harmanpreet, you know, she knows how to score runs.ย She knows how to lead this team. She is a World Cup winner. And we are very proud of her.ย India is very proud of her and her team. I just hope that success continues in that direction every day," said the captain of the 2005 World Cup final adding that there was an immense positivity and respect in the dressing room for each other.
"There is great respect for each individual's skill level.ย And when together they walk onto the park, they emerge as a great, unified force. And that is why India has achieved results in the past."
She pointed out that Harmanpreet has shown enough maturity in the game by sometimes choosing to play second fiddle and allowing others to flourish.ย
"Whether you play a second fiddle or you lead them, at the end of the day, it's a team game. You know, you need two people on the crease to score runs.ย So, whether she is striking the ball or she is the non-striker, and at the end of the day, we saw that even in the game against Pakistan, Smriti was flourishing at the other end when Harman was there. When Harman started taking singles, ones-twos, Smriti was there. So, it's about teamwork.ย And, you know, as I said, she has great respect. She walks tall in that change room because of her own individual performance as well. And together, obviously, the team looks good when they all walk out together," the stylish left-handed batter observed.
