In 1889, landmark legislation established Florida’s State Board of Health, a crucial turning point that brought organization, science, and statewide coordination to the fight against deadly diseases. The new system helped Florida respond more effectively to outbreaks, protect growing communities, and lay the foundation for the modern public health programs we rely on today. Do you know anyone with special medical needs that would require support during an emergency? The Florida Department of Health and local emergency management agencies developed a registry for individuals with special needs that would require assistance during a disaster. Special needs shelters are for those with disabilities or who require medical care that exceeds basic first aid. Pre-registration is important so emergency responders can ensure space is reserved for those in greatest need. Learn more about Florida’s special needs shelters and how to register at FloridaHealth.gov/SPNS #SpecialNeedsShelter #HurricaneSeason #FloridaHealth #EmergencyPreparedness

Hurricane season begins today, June 1, and will continue until November 30. 🌩️ If you haven't prepared your disaster supply kit already, now's the time to do so. Take the time to review your emergency plans, restock on supplies, and know your zone and routes. This preparation ensures you're ready long before a storm arrives. And remember, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation last year to permanently exempt select preparedness items from sales tax, saving families money while stocking up essentials. Protect your liver. Get tested. About 1 in 2 people with hepatitis B do not know they are infected. Hepatitis often shows no symptoms in its early stages, meaning many people may not realize they are affected. Getting tested is a simple but powerful step toward protecting your health. It helps you stay informed, seek care early if needed, and supports healthier communities across Florida. Learn more about screening and testing services available at your local county health department. FloridaHealth.gov/HepB #HepatitisAwareness #PublicHealth #GetTested #HealthyFlorida

In Florida, 1 out of every 5 homes has elevated radon levels. Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, and invisible gas that can go undetected without testing. Because there are no signs or symptoms, the only way to know if your home is affected is to test. Testing your home is simple, affordable, and an important step in protecting your long-term health. High radon levels can increase the risk of lung cancer, but taking action early can make a difference. Learn more about testing and sign-up to receive a free testing kit at FloridaHealth.gov/Radon. #Radon #RadonTesting #FloridaHealth #RadonAwareness

Florida’s beautiful coastline is made for summer fun — but staying safe in the water is just as important!. Warm saltwater can naturally contain bacteria like Vibrio vulnificus, which can enter the body through cuts, scrapes, or open wounds and may cause serious infections. Even small breaks in the skin can increase your risk while swimming in warm coastal waters. You can also be exposed to Vibrio by eating raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters. Before heading into the water, take a moment to check your skin and protect any open wounds, and make sure to cook shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) thoroughly. Learn more about Vibrio and how to stay safe this summer at FloridaHealth.gov/Vibrio #SafeSwimmingWeek #SummerSafety #Vibrio #WaterSafety
