#UmunsiwInka Celebrated in Rugerero Sector, bring together farmers, veterinary experts, government officials, and development partners to strengthen Rwandaโs dairy and livestock sector. ๐๐ท๐ผ
Held under the theme โInka mu Nganji za Rubavu, Umurage dukomeyeho,โ the event is supported through The Rwanda Dairy Development Project - Phase 2 (RDDP Phase II )implemented by
@RwandaAgri under
@RwandaAgriBoard -SPIU, in partnership with
@IFAD ,
@Heifer , and other stakeholders working to modernize dairy farming in Rwanda.
Speaking at the event, Jean Claude NDORIMANA, Director General of Animal Resources Development at MINAGRI, praised the impact of the Girinka Program launched by President Paul Kagame in 2006, noting that Rwanda moved from fewer than 170,000 cattle after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to more than 1.7 million cattle today.
He added that daily milk production has increased from about 330,000 liters to nearly 2.9 million liters per day nationwide.
โInka ni umurage wโu Rwanda,โ DG NDORIMANA said, emphasizing that cattle remain a symbol of wealth, nutrition, and national development.
He also thanked RDDP Phase II for supporting better animal health services, milk collection systems, climate-smart agriculture, and dairy entrepreneurship. The project is expected to benefit around 175,000 rural households and create nearly 28,800 jobs across the country.
Farmers were encouraged to improve feeding practices, provide enough clean water to cows, maintain hygiene during milking, and work closely with veterinarians to improve milk quality and fight livestock diseases.
During the event, outstanding farmers were recognized and rewarded for excellence in livestock farming, while some families also received cows as part of ongoing efforts to expand cattle ownership and improve livelihoods in rural communities.
DG NDORIMANA also announced that Umunsi wโInka, which has mainly been celebrated in Rubavu District, will now be elevated to the national level to further promote cattle farming and raise awareness about the importance of cows in Rwandaโs economy, nutrition, and culture.
