Now THIS is the Michael Movie the world needed!
Congratulations to John Branca, John McClain, Anton Fuqua, and BIG CHEERS for Jaafar Jackson.
I've followed the thin stream of leaks and whispers in the fan community for a year and a half - concerns, changes, what will they show, will they show the truth, the human, the man?
I admit, I was tentatively in agreement with the more cinema-savvy who thought the " MJ greatest hits" approach would be a disappointment. That there was so much under the surface of the man, the lesser-known truths, that should be shown.
What we got instead is some simplified family psychology, some sense of Michael maturing into the self-power-broker he became, major relationships (like the Brothers) reduced, - AND THE GREATEST HITS TO DANCE IN THE ISLES TO.
In this age of personal streaming, ear buds and headphones, smart-phones buzzing and fizzing, sequestered minds bored with their own algorithms, malls shut down, theaters almost extinct, broadcast radio all but lost - who knew people around the world craved a return to the SHARED experience of media?
I've cheered the team who made this movie. . .
But nobody could have yanked 30 million people out of their smart-phone dungeons all over the world except Michael.
That's what he always did.
The Estate and creative crew for Part II would do well to take the recipe for "Michael" and turn it up to 10.
And after that - put together a 4K compilation of the best performances from all concerts, no dialog, nothing but one clip after another - clean it all up nice, remix, remaster - and let theaters CRANK IT UP on Saturday nights every 2 weeks.
People don't have speakers anymore.
Movie theaters have BIG ones!
