Floods. Droughts. Heatwaves. When extreme weather strikes, it disrupts lives, livelihoods and communities. But for many older people in rural areas, recovery can be especially difficult. Ageing can bring added health risks, reduced mobility and fewer resources to cope with climate shocks. As climate change intensifies, how are older persons adapting, coping and rebuilding? Join us on June 15 as we mark 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day' with the launch of our national report – ‘Climate Resilient Ageing: Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency ’ and explore why older voices must be part of climate action. Climate change, manifested through extreme events such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, cyclones, and landslides, disproportionately affect elderly in rural areas. These events disrupt livelihood, health, and socio-economic security. Marginalized elderly face heightened vulnerability, yet are often deprioritized in disaster recovery and rehabilitation efforts. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026, we hope to highlight these challenges by capturing the lived experiences of rural elders and examining their coping mechanisms and community responses. Stay tuned for our forthcoming national report which provides actionable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and communities to better protect and empower older adults facing climate risks. #AgeingAndClimate #ClimateResilience #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay2026

“View ageing not as a decline, but as growth.” With this vision, HelpAge India and Inspiring Seniors Foundation jointly organised a roundtable on ‘Seniors as Tutors: A Model for Productive Ageing & Intergenerational Impact’. The discussion explored how older persons can contribute as tutors and mentors, sharing their knowledge, skills and life experiences with younger generations, while promoting active and productive ageing. The roundtable was led by Mr. Rohit Prasad, CEO, and Ms. Anupama Datta, Head – Policy, Research & Advocacy, HelpAge India, along with Ms. Malti Jaswal, Founder, Inspiring Seniors Foundation. Eminent experts including Dr. Nachiket Mor, Visiting Scientist, BALM – Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health; Mr. Philip O’Keefe, Senior Social Protection Specialist, The World Bank Group; Mr. Amit Yadav, Former Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment; and Mr. Ram Singh, Joint Director, Department of Education, Government of India, shared their insights. The conversation reinforced the need for a broader mindset shift - one that recognises older persons not only as recipients of care, but also as contributors, mentors and changemakers. By creating opportunities for older persons to remain engaged and share their strengths, we can build a society that not only adds years to life, but life to years, and turns age into an AdvantAge.

As we mark #WorldEnvironmentDay, it’s important to remember that older people are among the most affected during climate episodes and disasters—facing mobility challenges, chronic illnesses, and social isolation and inaccess to relief. Yet they are far from passive. Through Elder-Self-Help-Groups, the elderly support their community, share food and traditional knowledge, and help families cope emotionally during floods, droughts, and other climate events. The elderly are not just recipients of aid—they are leaders, changemakers storytellers, and pillars of community resilience. Today, let’s honour their wisdom and role in building sustainable, climate‑resilient communities. #AgeingAndClimate #ClimateResilience #ClimateEvents

If you ask what makes our work special, the answer isn't found in a report. It's found in moments like this. A HelpAge India team member and a 90-year-old woman, both striking the same pose and laughing together. She lives on her own, is a member of an Elder Self-Help Group, and spends her time caring for the village's little ones. Through the group and the community around it, she has friendship, support and a voice. Here is a woman in her nineties, living alone, vulnerable. Yet in her own community, she is also a caregiver, a contributor, a source of affection and trust. This is what impact means to us. Not just the services we provide, but the relationships we build. Because ageing well is not only about meeting needs. It is also about knowing you matter, that you belong and that someone is always happy to sit beside you and share a smile. An elder’s smile feels different. Because you know life has not been gentle. There were losses. Goodbyes no one talks about. Dreams folded away to make room for survival. And yet… somehow, there it is - a smile that still chooses warmth, still chooses joy, still reaches for you like a tight hug. Maybe that is why the smiles of our elders feel so special. Because they speak hope into our hearts. And remind us that the smallest acts of care matter more than we realise. These smiling faces are of residents from our Senior Care Homes where care, companionship and dignity help joy find its way back. Learn more: helpageindia.org/

In a world obsessed with anti-ageing, what if we paused to ask: why are we so afraid of looking like we have lived? Somewhere along the way, growing older became something to hide. Wrinkles softened. Hair coloured. Time disguised. We are told to fight ageing, resist it, erase every sign of it. But doesn't ageing have a beauty of its own? These hands have raised families, weathered storms, held grief, offered comfort and built lives. Today, they wear mehendi, paint each other’s nails and play freely. At our Senior Care Homes, these moments are small, joyful acts of celebration - reminders that beauty belongs to every age and every person deserves to feel beautiful, cared for and celebrated at every stage of life. What if we stopped asking how to look younger and started asking how to age with joy, dignity and self-love? What does ageing beautifully look like to you? 💛 #AgingBeautifully #aging #beauty #ageinggracefully #celebration #Fridayspecial

Like clay in skilled hands, support at the right moment can reshape lives. For 73-year-old Gitarani Pal - living in a remote village in West Bengal - pottery was once a way to survive after the sudden loss of her husband. Widowed and raising two daughters and a son, she worked tirelessly to survive, but like many older women navigating widowhood, financial insecurity and limited opportunities made stability difficult. Eight years ago, joining the 'Ma Sitala Elder Self-Help Group' became a turning point. Through collective support and access to a loan, Gitarani was able to strengthen her pottery work, support her family, get her daughters married and build a home of her own. Today, she continues to shape mud into objects of beauty and utility, while reminding us of something powerful: with care, dignity and community, lives too can be reshaped. #StoriesOfStrength #WomenEmpowerment #ActiveAgeing #Resilience #Community

As India’s population ages, the need for palliative care can no longer remain at the margins of healthcare conversations. Over 5.5 million older people in India are living with life-limiting and chronic conditions, yet more than 96% of those in need still lack access to palliative care - especially poor and marginalised elders in rural communities. This important co-authored piece by Dr. M.R Rajagopal, Founder & Chairman Emeritus, @palliumindia, and Dr. Ritu Rana, Mission Head – Healthcare, HelpAge India, highlights why palliative care must become an integral part of India’s healthcare infrastructure. The article underscores the urgent need for community-based and home-based models of care, stronger caregiver networks, trained frontline workers and systems that bring both medical and emotional support closer to where people live. This is also the approach taken by HelpAge India through its community-based Palliative Care programme for vulnerable older persons and their families. As India prepares for an ageing future, building compassionate, accessible and community-rooted systems of care must become a collective priority. Hypertension remains one of the most significant yet under-recognised health risks among older persons in India. Nearly one in two senior citizens aged 60 and above lives with this disease, often called a “silent killer” because it can quietly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and cognitive decline without obvious symptoms. Yet, with regular monitoring, timely treatment, healthy lifestyle choices and greater awareness, hypertension can be managed effectively. Yesterday, we marked 'World Hypertension Day' (May 17), with the theme this year being: "Controlling Hypertension Together". Let us take a moment today to remember that healthy ageing begins with preventive care, early action and accessible healthcare support for older persons. Because good heart health is not only about adding years to life, but helping older persons continue to live those years with strength, dignity and independence. Share this with your parents, grandparents and loved ones to encourage regular monitoring and healthier ageing. #WorldHypertensionDay #HypertensionAwareness #PreventiveHealthcare #HelpAgeIndia

As we move through life, we often discover that family can take many forms: in friendship, care, companionship, community and the people who continue to show up for us in quiet, meaningful ways. This International Day of Families, we celebrate every bond that helps our elders feel seen, valued and at home. #InternationalDayOfFamilies #FamilyDay #Family

On #NationalTechnologyDay, we celebrate the power of innovation to transform lives. But true technological progress is meaningful only when it is inclusive. In India’s rapidly digitizing world, millions of elderly citizens still struggle to access essential online services, from digital payments and healthcare to communication and government benefits. According to our research, nearly 59% of senior citizens remain digitally excluded, highlighting a growing divide in an increasingly connected nation. As India moves forward technologically, no one should be left behind. Bridging the digital divide requires not just access to technology, but patience, guidance, and intergenerational learning. Across the country, young volunteers are helping senior citizens build digital confidence — teaching them how to use smartphones, access online services, and stay safe in the digital world. These moments of learning are also moments of connection, strengthening bonds between generations while ensuring that technology becomes a tool for inclusion, independence, and dignity for all.

Mother’s Day may have passed, but the love, gratitude and care we feel for our mothers shouldn't be limited to just one day. As many of us celebrate the women who raised us, it is also worth sparing a thought for the countless elderly mothers and grandmothers who spend their days in silence, loneliness and neglect. Chanda Maiya is one of them. At 70, she lives alone despite having three sons. Confined to her bed by diabetes, hypertension and arthritis, she waits for the familiar knock on the door — a visit from our Mobile Healthcare Unit (MHU) team that brings not just medicines, but also care, comfort and connection. After a lifetime of putting everyone else first, many older women are left to navigate illness and ageing on their own. And when it comes to healthcare and emotional support, elderly women are often the most overlooked. Our MHUs are helping reach mothers and grandmothers like Chanda Maiya with dignity, compassion and hope. Join us in turning love into action. This Mother’s Day, our Senior Care Homes echoed with laughter, music, warmth and love as our beloved resident mothers celebrated alongside children, youngsters and well-wishers. ❤️🌸 These weren’t just celebrations — they were reminders that every mother deserves to feel seen, cherished and valued. After a lifetime of caring for others, many elderly mothers are left longing for companionship, dignity and affection. Through every smile and shared moment, we hoped to remind our “Super Maas” that they are never forgotten. ✨ As we celebrate the miracle of motherhood today, let us also carry this spirit forward beyond a single day. Together create a world where no mother ever feels neglected, abandoned or unseen. #MaaKaMahatva Mothers spend a lifetime caring for others. They shape our lives with patience, strength and quiet sacrifice. But as years go by, often those who once nurtured us, now need nurturing themselves. The people who once looked after everyone else, often find themselves needing care, support and companionship too. Today, women form a large part of India’s ageing population. Many older women live alone, facing financial insecurity, social isolation, neglect and limited access to healthcare and support systems. At HelpAge India, we work towards ensuring that elderly women, especially those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged, can age with dignity, care and respect. This Mother’s Day, let’s take a moment to reflect not only on what our mothers gave us, but also on what we can give back. Join us in building a world where every mother and grandmother feels seen, supported and valued. Let’s do our bit - For Mothers. For Grandmothers … For Maa. Log onto : helpageindia.org/mothers-day…

Motherhood is often felt more than it is seen. It lives in the smallest moments - a hand that steadies you, a voice that reassures you, a love that asks for nothing in return. So quiet, so constant, so deeply woven into our lives that we often forget to pause and truly acknowledge it. And then, slowly, time changes things. The hands that once held everything together begin to need holding. The voice that once comforted waits to be heard. Today, women over 60 are one of the fastest growing populations in the world and yet, they are among the most socially isolated. After a lifetime of caring for others, many are left hoping for the same care in return. Take a moment to listen to these accomplished voices reflect on what mothers truly mean to us and the debt that calls not for words, but for action. Because this isn’t just about gratitude. It’s about responsibility. This Mother’s Day, don’t just say it. Show up. Sit a little longer. Listen a little deeper. Hold her a little closer. And then, let that love travel beyond your own home to a mother who may be waiting for someone to care. Join us in turning love into action. Motherhood lives in the quiet things - small sacrifices, constant care, love that asks for nothing in return. But how often do we pause to truly acknowledge it? As time passes, many mothers and grandmothers face loneliness, health challenges, and a lack of support - after a lifetime of giving. This Mother’s Day, let’s change that. Honour her not just with words, but with empathy and action. Celebrate her. Cherish her. Make her feel seen. Join HelpAge India’s #MaaKaMahatva initiative.

As spring slowly awakens in Ladakh, something beautiful is taking root - hands that have nurtured lives are now nurturing the earth once again. In our Senior Care Home in Leh, elders and staff came together to prepare the soil, plant new beginnings and graft apple and apricot trees that will bloom in seasons to come. The joy of nurturing new life, and the quiet fulfilment of doing it together as a community, was evident on their faces. On the eve of Buddha Purnima, it feels especially meaningful to pause and reflect on these words of the Buddha: “There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path.” In every seed sown, in every moment shared, let's always remember, that happiness is not something we seek but something we create - together. #BuddhaPurnima #Seniorcare #Eldercare #ActiveAging #CommunityJoy #NatureIsBeautiful #CommunityVibes
