“This is what our garbage does.”
A lifeless giant sea turtle was found along the shoreline of Brgy. Fishing Village in Malita, Davao Occidental, on Wednesday, June 3.
Residents were saddened by the sight of discarded rubber tires, thick ropes, and other waste debris entangled around the body of the green sea turtle.
Resident Monell Estilloso, who documented the lifeless pawikan, expressed dismay over the situation, saying he was particularly saddened by the thought that nobody had been able to help the turtle as it struggled to free itself from the debris wrapped around its body.
The Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines also emphasized how marine pollution continues to claim the lives of marine animals.
“A preventable death. A wasteful loss. An unnecessary tragedy. Marine pollution continues to claim innocent lives. Dispose of waste responsibly—what we throw away does not simply disappear,” the organization said.
