Farewell to the EVE lab, the best PhD supervisor - @englishse, and my (almost) decade at University of Bristol! 👋
Final EVE lab send off for @HesterWeaving tonight before she embarks on exciting science/life adventures (new country, new species, new techniques!). I will miss this wonderful human who brings me iced coffee on hot days, made an amazing tsetse mug, & set up our tsetse lab!

🚨New job alert🚨 I'm soon starting a post-doc at @ucdavis in the Vector Genetics Lab with Dr Greg Lanzaro! I'll assess potential impacts of #malaria resistant GM mosquitoes on wild populations and non-target species. Incl. exciting field work on islands São Tomé and Príncipe🦟

Really enjoyed the @RoyEntSoc #RESExtreme24 event last Thursday - thanks for inviting me! Such an interesting line-up of talks across the breadth of behaviour, physiology and different groups (pollinators, vectors). Congratulations to @HesterWeaving for winning Best Student Talk!

We also found that effects of heatwave were even felt in the offspring generation, with more daughters being born than sons. ♀️ ♂️ (4/6)

Ultimately, our results help explain why tsetse flies are declining in parts of their sub-Saharan range. This has important implications for sleeping sickness which the flies spread to humans, livestock and wild animals. 🌍 (5/6)

More insect species should be investigated to see if the patterns we found in tsetse flies are common to other less investigated insect species.🐜🪳 🪲 (6/6)

This is surprising, as for most insects male fertility is more sensitive to high temperature. 🦋🐞🦗 (3/6)

We found a three day heatwave reduced the number of offspring tsetse flies produced if either males or females were heat-exposed. 🔥 (2/6)

A very proud supervisor moment - my first PhD student @HesterWeaving passed her viva! (minor corrections) She's done brilliantly, publishing all 4 data chapters, navigating a pandemic, setting up tsetse lab, supervisor on mat leave for last year (sorry). Well done Hester!!!

Paper out today! Collab with the ESEB Fertility Limit Network, led by @liamrdougherty. We mapped studies looking at the relationship between temperature and animal reproduction pointing out important research gaps. 🦒🦋🐸🦎🐠Read here: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wi…

New article in @J_Therm_Biol!🚨We look at upper thermal tolerance plasticity in five species of tsetse fly. 🪰 Overall, plasticity was weak, indicating these disease vectors may suffer from #climatechange.🥵See here: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… Collab w/ @englishse and @Lab_APE (1/3)

We also find that basal upper thermal tolerance was related to larger body sizes within 3 of 5 of the species tested. 🪰 🪰 🪰

Tsetse body size gets smaller at higher development temperatures due to the temperature size rule. Therefore, we can expect that these species will suffer from combined small body size and reduced thermal tolerance in a warming world. 🌍
