Halifax Regional Police release impaired driving statistics for May Halifax Regional Police charged 50 drivers with impaired related offences during the month of May. Of the 50 drivers, 32 were charged with impaired operation of a conveyance by alcohol, four were charged with impaired operation of a conveyance by a drug and 14 drivers were issued driving suspensions for operation of a conveyance while having consumed alcohol. Of the drivers who provided breath samples, officers were able to detect a wide range of blood alcohol concentrations (80-320mg %) with 12 drivers being at least twice the legal limit. Twelve drivers refused to provide a breath sample and were charged with the offence of refusal. Of the 50 drivers, 17 calls were received from people who suspected impaired driving. We thank the public for reporting suspected impaired drivers and encourage anyone to call 911 immediately if they suspect someone is driving impaired. Here are some signs of an impaired driver: • Driving unreasonably fast, slow or at an inconsistent speed • Drifting in and out of lanes • Tailgating and changing lanes frequently • Making exceptionally wide turns • Changing lanes or passing without sufficient clearance • Overshooting or stopping well before stop signs or stop lights • Disregarding signals and lights • Approaching signals or leaving intersections too quickly or slowly • Driving without headlights, failing to lower high beams, or leaving turn signals on • Driving with windows open in cold or inclement weather If you see a potential impaired driver, call 911 immediately and give the call taker your location along with a description of the vehicle, including the licence plate number, colour, make and model, the direction of travel for the vehicle and a description of the driver. -30-

Police lay stunting charges Police charged a driver for stunting today in Bedford. At approximately 9:15 a.m., a member of the Traffic Unit observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed outbound on Highway 102 near Larry Uteck Blvd. The officer observed the vehicle’s speed at 159 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. An 18-year-old man was ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. The fine in Nova Scotia for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver’s record. In addition, the driver received a seven-day license suspension, and the vehicle was seized. Highfield Park Drive, between the two entrances to Joseph Young Street, is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. There is a large police presence in the area. There is no threat to public safety. Police continue to investigate the homicide of Nelson Tyrelle Beals Today marks the fourth anniversary of the homicide of Nelson Tyrelle Beals. On June 11, 2022, at approximately 2:10 a.m. Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of shots fired on Viscaya Place in Dartmouth. Officers located Nelson Beals, 34, who had been shot and was deceased, at a residence. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death to be a homicide. Investigators believe there are people who have information that could help solve Nelson’s homicide. Investigators are asking them to do the right thing and share what they know with police. It is never too late to come forward as the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation into Nelson’s homicide. The Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case and ask that anyone with information about Nelson’s murder contact police at 902-490-5020. -30- 22-69961

Police warn of phone scam Police are warning the public to be cautious of a phone scam that appears to be spoofing a Halifax Regional Police phone-line. Today, Halifax Regional Police received several reports of people receiving phone calls from the department’s non-emergency reporting/dispatch phone number 902-490-5020 which appears on the call display. The person claims to be from the Halifax Regional Police and advises the victim that their personal information was compromised as part of an international scam. If you receive a call like this, do not provide or confirm any personal or financial information and hang up the phone. Scammers can spoof phone numbers to make it appear as though they’re calling from a trusted source. Do not give personal information to anyone by phone, email or in person unless you are certain of their identity and the legitimacy of the organization they represent. Several of the reports today were from other areas of Canada. If you have received a call like this and have given any personal or financial information to the scammer, please contact your local police department. -30-

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in finding a vehicle that was stolen from a business in Dartmouth. The red vehicle pictured here was stolen from The Water Shed, located at 515 Main Street in Dartmouth on April 14 at approximately 11:50 p.m. It is a 2005 Ford F550 truck with company logos on both doors and a Nova Scotia license plate that reads GT34746. The vehicle had hydrofracking equipment on board at the time it was taken. The second picture is of the suspects’ truck. This vehicle arrived at The Water Shed, a passenger got out of the vehicle, entered the company’s truck, and drove away. Anyone with information about the vehicle’s whereabouts or the suspects’ identity is asked to call police at 902-490-5020. Police continue to investigate homicide of Carla Gail Strickland Today marks the 35th anniversary of the homicide of Carla Gail Strickland. The Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case. On June 5, 1991, at 12:58 p.m., police responded to a report of person who was believed to be deceased along the north side of Lake Mic Mac adjacent to Highway 118 in Dartmouth. The victim was identified as Carla Gail Strickland and the Medical Examiner Service determined her death to be a homicide. The investigation revealed that Carla had spent the evening of June 2, 1991, celebrating a friend’s birthday at a popular Halifax club. She then went to Albro Lake Beach in Dartmouth with three other people where they stayed until dawn when Carla was dropped off at the Tim Horton’s on Wyse Road in Dartmouth. This was the last time Carla was seen. Investigators believe that there are people who have information that could help solve Carla’s homicide. Investigators hope that the passage of time will encourage them to do the right thing and come forward with what they know. It is never too late to come forward and the smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation. Investigators ask anyone with information about Carla’s homicide to contact police at 902-490-5020. Carla’s case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for specified major unsolved crimes. Callers must contact the Rewards Program at 1-888-710-9090, must provide their name and contact information, and may be called to testify in court. All calls will be recorded. Police investigate robbery Police are investigating a robbery that occurred in Dartmouth last week. On May 24 at approximately 4:15 p.m. police responded to a report of a robbery at the Canadian Tire, located at 30 Lamont Terrace in Dartmouth. Upon arrival, officers located an injured employee who had been assaulted by a man attempting to steal store merchandise. The suspect fled the area in a vehicle prior to police arrival. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate him. The victim was transported to the hospital by EHS for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is described as between 30 to 40 years old and approximately 6’1” tall with a slender build and short, greying facial hair. At the time, he was wearing a dark sweater, blue jeans, a black baseball hat, black shoes and black sunglasses with blue lenses. The vehicle that the suspect fled in is described as a light blue, older model, four door sedan. It is possibly a Chrysler. Update: Baby’s mother dies in hospital A woman who arrived in hospital on Friday after giving birth has died. On May 22 police were notified of a 23-year-old woman in hospital in critical condition who appeared to have just given birth. Her baby was not with her, prompting an urgent search for the newborn. Remains of an infant were located on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. in a wooded area off Old Coach Road in Goodwood. The mother has since died in hospital. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service will determine cause and manner of death. The infant’s cause and manner of death remain under investigation by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service. Due to the complexity of this incident, it may take an extended period of time to determine the results for both the infant and the mother. The police investigation remains ongoing. Police extend condolences to the woman and infant’s loved ones and to all those grieving in the community. -30- 26-79385

Weekend update Halifax Regional Police responded to 680 calls for service over the weekend. Some notable incidents are as follows: Police charge woman with attempted murder On May 23 at approximately p.m., police responded to the 6500 block of Bayers Road in Halifax for a reported stabbing. Officers breached the door of the location and arrested the suspect without incident. The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital. The victim and the suspect were known to one another. Marley White, 41, will appear in Halifax provincial court to face charges of: • Attempted murder • Possession of a weapon dangerous • Uttering threats 26-79761 -30- Theft leads to multiple charges On May 23 at approximately p.m., police responded to a theft at Sport Check, Halifax Shopping Centre. Police saw a man fleeing the store with unpaid merchandise and entering the passenger side of a vehicle waiting on Cook Avenue. Officers stopped the vehicle, the suspect got out of the passenger side, confronted officers, and resisted arrest. The arresting officer and suspect were transported by EHS to the hospital with minor injuries. Both were released from hospital and the suspect remained in police custody.
