80 yrs ago today, Paul Tibbets piloted Enola Gay over Hiroshima. Following was Necessary Evil w/ navigator Russell Gackenbach.
Found the signed Tibbets photo in a store. In '14, I met Gackenbach; he signed his plane photo, but the ink didn't hold.
Today, both sit on my bookshelf.

114 yrs ago today, this ad was in the 6/1/1911 edition of "Arms and the Man." Claims the boy "would not be able to move for a week" if he endured the "fierce recoil" w/o a Maxim Silencer. Also, the .22 cal silencer cost $5 (~$175 today) & no stamp/registration!

People often describe gun parts as "milspec" as a term of endearment, as if parts that are good enough for the military are good enough for the rest of us. In reality, milspec standards can be rather poor, and history shows this to be true.
