So let's just say you HAD to choose between going to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard and you'd never been to either... Is one the obvious winner? (N.B. with kids)

Nodding so hard at this @amil piece that my head might fly off. May have yelled I AM A PERSON TOO in a moment of desperation last week. thecut.com/2023/03/is-gentle…

Such a divine pleasure in reading a good but entirely unimportant novel.

I tried to profile the novelist Catherine Lacey, who struggles to organize all her selves. She's just written a bona fide masterpiece whose protagonist is an unstable new element in the periodic table of literature. This is what I came up with instead: theatlantic.com/books/archiv…

Look closely, and you can see the two of us, reflected back in this gorgeous monstrosity.

In her new novel, @_catherinelacey explores whether an artist can bury herself so far under work that it becomes impossible to find the traces of an authentic self, writes @HillaryKelly. on.theatln.tc/KlpLKqF

Catherine Lacey's fiction will not solve your problems. Here's my not-quite-a-profile of one of *the* novelists of this (my) generation. theatlantic.com/books/archiv…

Amazing photos and video work from @marklim, who managed to find so many different Catherines inside one body/one face.

I wrote something for @TheAtlantic about kids and why they don't read the way they used to. It's not just screens. @MacKidsBooks #TheLostYear #mglit #reading #kidsbooks theatlantic.com/books/archiv…

Pitting Dickinson against Whitman for anything but the Finals is an act of war against my personal theory that every writer is at heart Dickinsonian or Whitmanian, can't be neither, can't be both.

Want to be clear that I aired this theory to none other than HILARY MANTEL and she didn't find fault with it! (She was also exceedingly polite and kind, so it might have some holes.)

If there is one recentish book I could go back and write about it would Caroline Fraser's Prairie Fires bc sure it's a bio of Laure Ingalls, but really it's a stick of dynamite under the notion of Manifest Destiny and an evisceration of standard American West mythology.
