On a recent aerial survey in the Gulf of Maine, our #AndersonCabotCenter scientists spotted a diverse array of marine mammals, including a #BlueWhale, humpback whales, and a right whale mom and calf.

Keep your eyes peeled! Someone spotted a North Atlantic right whale skim feeding at the surface just off Long Pond, Conception Bay on 1 Nov. Lots of copepods in the area. New England Aquarium IDed her as #1408 , "Freckles", born in 2013 and never before recorded in Canada.

A century long debate, pygmy right #whales' origin has been settled: they are the last of the cetotheres, a whale group thought to be long extinct. Grouped with #rightwhales because they skim-feed, the adaptation may have what prevented their extinction.

The satellite tagged female killer whale keeps transmitting! She (and presumably the rest of her group) have made 2 trips into the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, but otherwise has stuck near the coast of Newfoundland's northern peninsula since 27 July. (red = most recent)

We were standing near a trash can at a concert (5π entertainment value, highly recommend) and a man with a media pass walked into the side of it while brandishing the pass like he fully expected it would make the garbage can move.
And later he did it AGAIN, from the other side!

Ningaloo Aviation in Australia has reported the below sighting: a mother humpback whale with TWO CALVES!!! It is unknown if they are twins (I donβt think weβve ever seen more than one calf in humpbacks, but need to research more) or if she adopted a second but this is RARE!!
