One of my Upwork One on One Mentorship student just crossed $30,000 in earnings 😁 James is one of my students who makes me very proud. This milestone was a target I set for him this year. Told him he must end the year with at least $30,000 in earnings on Upwork and we took it one step at a time. Lo and behold he did. See 👇🏻

Looking for a remote job? Don’t make the mistake of only clicking the Apply button and hoping for the best. Many companies receive hundreds of applications for a single role. Sometimes, taking an extra step can help you stand out. Visit the company’s LinkedIn page, learn more about them, and identify the people involved in hiring. Understanding who you’re applying to can give you better insight into the role and the company. A thoughtful approach is often more effective than sending applications blindly.

Before applying for a remote job, spend a few minutes researching the company. Read about what they do. Look at their LinkedIn page. Understand the role they are hiring for and whether your skills match what they need. Doing this helps you write stronger applications and prepares you better if you get invited for an interview. The more you understand the company, the easier it becomes to present yourself as a good fit.

I know you have needs, but depending on allowance or someone else for financial support is not always enough. It can help you for a period of time, but it doesn’t give you control over your personal income. That is why at some point, you will need to start building your own source of income. Not in an illegal way, but by learning real skills. The internet has made it possible for people to earn using different skills and services online. That is where digital skills come in. Skills like UI/UX design, graphic design, copywriting, and other online services that businesses actively need. These skills can help you create ways to earn online and get paid for your work. They can also build income that lasts over time. So pick one skill and start earning from it.

Every day, send out proposals on Upwork. If you do, you increase your chances of getting clients. Share your work every day on LinkedIn, and you become more visible to potential clients. If you do this every day by sharing your work on X, Instagram, and other social media platforms, more of the right people get to see what you do. Do this every day. This is how freelancing works. Not waiting. Not hoping. But showing up and putting yourself in front of people even if they didn't ask for it. Do this constantly.

Let me drop a simple reminder for freelancers. Go and check your Upwork profile. Because sometimes, what is stopping clients from taking you seriously is not your skill-it is your presentation. Start with your profile picture. Then look at your profile headline and bio. And also your overall profile clarity. Ask yourself: Does your profile picture look professional enough? Does your headline clearly explain what you do? Does your profile make it easy for a client to trust you at first glance? In freelancing, clients form an opinion about you before they ever read your proposal. That first impression is based on how you present yourself online. Imagery, branding, and clarity all play a role in whether a client takes you seriously or moves on. Your skill matters, yes. But your presentation is what gets you the chance to show that skill.

The saving part hits different when you're actually freelancing because those irregular income months will test you fast.

Your first client can become your biggest opportunity. One project does not always end with one payment. In many cases, a client who is satisfied with your work comes back with more projects, recommends you to other people, or keeps working with you for a long time. That is why your first delivery matters. Freelancing is built on trust as much as it is built on skill. When clients see that you communicate well, understand their needs, and consistently deliver quality work, they are often more willing to work with you again. Sometimes, the real value of a client is not in the first job, but in the work opportunities you get from them afterwards. This is something that happens across different fields, especially in writing, design, and other digital services where businesses often need ongoing support. Many long-term opportunities begin with a single project that was handled well. The project in front of you may look small today. But the relationship you build from it could become one of the biggest opportunities in your freelancing journey. Sometimes, your first client is not just the beginning of your freelancing journey. They become the start of opportunities you never expected.

Freelancers, Your potential clients are not only on freelancing platforms. They are also on social media. Many business owners and founders spend time on platforms like X, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok every day. If you limit yourself to only one place, you may be limiting your opportunities. You have to position yourself so that people can discover your work. Show what you know. Show samples of your work. Build relationships. Make it easy for people to notice you and understand the value you provide. Sometimes, the client you are looking for may not be on a freelancing platform. They may already be scrolling through social media.

One thing you will notice in life is that people are not held back by lack of information. Most people already know what they want to do. The problem is not knowledge. It is execution. They think too much, plan too long, and wait for everything to feel right before they start. But nothing ever feels fully ready at the beginning. Clarity does not come before action. It comes after you start moving. Confidence does not come before experience. It comes from repetition. Most people stay stuck because they are waiting for certainty. But progress does not require certainty. It requires movement. Start first. Adjust along the way.

What actually helps people after learning a skill is not just the knowledge, but how they apply and build on it. Implementation. Learning alone is not enough. You implement what you learn. That is how growth happens. People who grow are the ones who apply what they learn and keep improving along the way. Personal development. This is about putting more into your growth. Your time, your energy, your learning environment, and the tools that help you work better all contribute to how far you go. Networking. Connect with people and build relationships. The relationships you maintain can open doors that skills alone may not open. Being in the right spaces creates more opportunities over time. Professionalism. How you communicate, how you respond, and how you carry yourself in work situations matters. It affects how people trust you and how long opportunities stay with you. These are some of the things that determine how far people go after learning a skill.

If your goal is to build long-term financial freedom, there are certain things you cannot ignore. ✅One of them is freelancing. Freelancing gives you the opportunity to earn beyond the limits of a traditional job and create income based on the value you provide. ✅The next is having the right mentor. A mentor with real experience who has already walked the path can give you direction, share practical lessons, and help you avoid mistakes. Learning from someone with real experience often helps you move faster and make better decisions. ✅Then comes saving. Saving from your earnings is just as important. Keeping part of what you earn prepares you for opportunities and for periods when income is not flowing as expected. ✅Another important piece is wise diversification. Over time, relying on only one source of income can become a risk. Building other streams of income or investing in different opportunities creates more stability and reduces your dependence on a single source of income. Freelancing, the right mentorship, consistent saving, and wise diversification are not separate ideas. Together, they form a stronger foundation for building lasting financial freedom. I hope you find this helpful.

To my fellow freelancers, Take this as an important reminder. Be intentional with the money you make from freelancing. Freelancing is not a straight line. It moves in phases. There are periods where work comes in steadily and everything feels active. There are also periods where things slow down. That is the reality of freelancing. Most people only understand freelancing during the good periods. When money is coming in, it feels like it never stops. So they stop thinking ahead. But the truth is, slow periods are not exceptions. They are part of the process. What you do during your earning periods determines how stable you are when things slow down. That is where most freelancers make mistakes. Financial discipline is part of staying in freelancing for the long run. It is what helps you stay steady when income is not consistent. Long-term stability is not built in one season. It is built across seasons.

This is a great initiative
UEFA has appointed Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Aston Villa on August 12. It follows Artan being denied entry to America to officiate at the World Cup, and after discussions with CAF.
