"This is the most interesting thing to me: that which is the most essential act of the human, the natural prayer of our souls, is something which doesn’t simply endure in us regardless of circumstances. it’s something which is only ultimately revealed at the right material moment, when historical forces align to protect and fortify the possibility of its appearance. The natural prayer of the human soul goes undetectable under historical conditions where its preconditions are not met or are intentionally blocked. What is metaphysically first, isn’t necessarily factically first. This is one of the key insights of Hegelianism (and Heideggerianism too): essence must appear, and if the conditions of its appearance aren’t met, it won’t. This means, for instance, that we could find ourselves living out a historical moment of total eclipse, with the spiritual daylight darkened to brutal night. This is what I mean when I say: we live in the false world."
