What an honor to help @HowardCC faculty and staff kick off the academic year this morning! Thank you to @HowardCCPrez for inviting me to talk about student parents and the part we all play in ensuring their success.

Congresswoman Lee was a force. I met her in Texas, when I was the Dean of the Lone Star College Centers at Greenspoint and Victory. Those centers were in the heart of her district. She believed in the students there, she provided them international opportunities with a Chinese exchange program; one that I was honored to have been selected to travel with some truly incredible students. We spent nearly two weeks in China because of her insistence that the students of Houston be exposed to the world. What she didn’t know was she was also exposing a newly minted community college administrator to the world as well. This was my first big international trip. When I traveled to DC, I saw her in the halls talking with Congressman John Lewis, once. Both had a serious demeanor, and you knew they were plotting ways to get into good trouble. I can only imagine she is now reunited with her friend and enjoying her reward for leading a life of service. Her presence will not only be missed in Houston, but also right here in Maryland. She was a true champion for community college students. Rest well, Congresswoman Lee.

I began my full-time career in academia at a community college fourteen years ago this coming August. God has been with me every step of the way.
