The single biggest thing separating beginners who break through from beginners who plateau: The first ones spend most of their study time producing sentences. The second ones spend most of their study time reading explanations. The good news is the gap is fixable.

Most beginner Mandarin books spend 90% of the page explaining the grammar and 10% letting you practice it. That's why you can recognize ไบ† sentences perfectly when you read them, but freeze when you have to produce one yourself. Reading about grammar isn't using grammar.
