Today would have been Cardon Banfield’s 84th birthday. In a few weeks time it marks 10 years since his partially mummified body was found in a tent. He had his 74th birthday either whilst he was near the end of his life or he had already been deceased. Although the Cardon Banfield Foundation closed at the end of 2025 the memory of the man, who was fundamentally let down by the services which knew him, lives on. This is the first time - since 2016 - I’ve been able to process this personal and professional loss as a private citizen who knew him. It has come with immense grief and pain. I met Cardon a couple of years earlier in the Worcester YMCA. I worked alongside him for a few weeks and he was intelligent, kind, funny and just, well, human. He would blabber on about random stuff and then go for his food or to his room. He was a man in his 70’s with issues but a great big heart. It stung on a personal and professional level when authorities tried to chalk his death to another homeless death statistic. Cardon was a person who deserved better at the end of his life. His death is a permanent stain on the city of Worcester and the UK. With this said, lessons have been learned and services have improved. I believe the right people are in charge to keep the core structures I and the volunteers of Hugo’s Earthquake/#JusticeForCardon campaign and the Cardon Banfield Foundation fought tirelessly for. I trust they will continue this and prove Cardon wasn’t a statistic but instead a catalyst for change. The image attached has been sharpened up to remove the distortion especially for this day. It ensures he will never be forgotten. I also wish to send happy birthday wishes to his sister, Olive Banfield, on this day too. Although she lost her brother in a horrific way, she still has the kindness and compassion which defines humanity at its greatest. Cardon Gideon Banfield: Happy birthday. You will never be forgotten and you will always be loved. This is your day. Yours, Hugo

What is TARGET: Yerevan? On 7 June, Armenians will vote in a parliamentary election that could determine whether Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan remains in power. This AnewZ documentary examines allegations of foreign interference in Armenia’s political landscape and the broader struggle for influence in the South Caucasus. At the centre of the investigation are secret recordings involving former ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo, alongside lobbyists, oligarch-linked figures and political operatives. Experts featured in the film argue that Moscow benefits from instability in the region, saying prolonged tensions help preserve Russian influence in the South Caucasus. AnewZ has premiered Shadow of the Cross, a new investigative documentary examining trust, silence and the power of neutrality in war and humanitarian work. From Theresienstadt and Soviet prisoners of war during World War Two, to Garabagh, Ukraine, the Russian Red Cross, China’s Red Cross credibility crisis and Ebola aid fraud in West Africa, the film follows one central question: When an emblem opens roads, prisons and conflict zones, who ensures that trust is not abused?
