On this day back in 1981, work was all about the finishing touches. Just 12 days after these photos were taken, the iconic Humber Bridge would open to traffic for the first time. It changed forever transport around the Humber region, while giving it it's first true landmark (there's a chance we may be a touch biased). In the charts, Adam Ant was just finishing his 5 week stint at No.1 with Stand and Deliver . Cinema audiences were enjoying Superman 2, The Cannonball Run, and Flash Gordon. While we've got you, does anyone have any info about the house in the second image - the one to the right of the Hessle Anchorage? #HumberBridge #LocalHistory #Engineering

On this day 50 years ago, the Barton Tower was progressing well and it had reached 117metres. The North Tower topped out in 1974, as it was much easier due to the good chalk layer in the area. The Barton Tower is located 500 metres into the Humber Estuary and its foundations had to be sunk into a thick bed of shifting silty clay – which presented some significant engineering challenges. Blasting out of workers' radios would have been Combine Harvester (Brand New Key) by The Wurzels, which was the No.1 single in the UK. June 8th 1976 also saw a major political and economic milestone as the UK and Iceland officially ended the Third Cod War. Across the country temperatures were rising ahead of the 1976 heatwave. While the most intense heat occurred later in the month, the early June sun began to strain water reservoirs, signaling the start of the historic summer drought. #HumberBridge #Engineering #History
