The Thirteenth Meeting of the Representatives of Competent Authorities Identified under the Early Notification Convention and the Assistance Convention concluded today in Vienna🇦🇹 @IAEAorg HQ. 4️⃣0️⃣ years ago, these two Conventions established the framework for emergency preparedness and response when the call comes to support and act. This week demonstrated the operational system built upon it,” said DDG-NS Karine Herviou in her closing remarks to the meeting, adding that, “ it important to also highlight that the fundamental principles of the Conventions remain unchanged, and the need of an early notification and timely and efficient communication needs to remain the first indispensable step for a proper emergency management”. Representatives of 114 Member States return home with strengthened cooperation and connections as well as recommendations that will guide international nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response in the years ahead.

Last week, an @iaeaorg workshop on Establishing National Technical & Scientific Support Organizations from blueprint to operation was held in Vienna 🇦🇹. Regulatory Cooperation Forum #RCF members engaged in discussions with Technical and Scientific Support Organization Forum #TSOF, on how to further support countries to establish and strengthen national TSOs, with a focus on the TSO Self Capability Assessment #TOSCA Methodology. Shared experiences focused on how to further enhance nuclear safety. This is the first workshop jointly delivered as a result of collaboration between the RCF and the Technical and Scientific Support Organization Forum (TSOF). RCF was established in 2010 as a regulator-to-regulator forum to promote and improve collaboration and coordination among members with the goal of achieving a high level of #NuclearSafety.

Today at the Nuclear Safety Standards Committee #NUSSC – 61st Meeting, DDGNS Karine Herviou, focused on the importance of the @IAEAorg Safety Standards and its role in protection people and the environment from harmful effects of ionizing radiation. She highlighted the important role of the NUSSC members: “ Your expertise and commitment remain essential to the development and strengthening of the IAEA Safety Standards, which serve as a global reference for nuclear safety,” she said, adding that “these standards also support emerging applications—including at sea— underpinning that a coherent international approach to ensure safety, security and non-proliferation is vital.”

At a recent event on Nuclear-Powered Commercial Shipping and Floating Nuclear Power Plants, organised by the 🇳🇴Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority @dsa_stralevern, DDGNS Karine Herviou highlighted a critical moment for global shipping and a growing interest from the maritime community, which calls for the need to have a coherent international framework to help enable these technologies while ensuring high levels of safety, security and non-proliferation standards. “This is the goal of the IAEA-Initiative: The Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea, also known as ATLAS,” she said, adding that “it is important to build a shared understanding of the opportunities, challenges and requirements for deploying nuclear applications at sea.” DDGNS Herviou underscored the strong collaboration between the International Maritime Organization @IMOHQ and @iaeaorg, as it offers a unique opportunity to jointly define measures to meet the needs of the maritime sector into a clean energy one.
