Most modern vehicles are equipped with anti lock braking systems (ABS). If the system activates while braking DO NOT PUMP THE BRAKES! This will greatly INCREASE the stopping distance. ABS does the pumping for us.

4 wheel drive applies acceleration forces to all 4 wheels. It does not change our turning and braking capabilities. 4 wheel drive helps move the vehicle from a stand still. Misunderstanding 4 wheel drive leads to many SUV and pickup truck drivers to overdrive conditions.
