At the ICHG Conference which is still ongoing, I’ve learned that Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) isn’t caused by elevated hCG levels, but by GDF15 (Growth Differentiation Factor 15), a placental protein that plays a key role in triggering the severe nausea and vomiting seen in HG. This discovery is a game-changer!
Research, including genomic studies, is uncovering how GDF15 affects brain pathways responsible for appetite and nausea control. As we deepen our understanding of GDF15’s role, targeted treatments and preventive measures for HG could become a reality, potentially bringing an end to this debilitating condition. 🧬💡

Day 1 of the International Colloquium on Hyperemesis Gravidarum (ICHG 2024) is underway here in Ventura, California!
It’s inspiring to see such a diverse gathering of experts—geneticists, physicians, researchers, lived experiences and more—coming together to share insights and advance our understanding of this important condition 🇺🇬
