Sir William Gilliatt was an accomplished gynaecologist at the Middlesex Hospital and King's College Hospital, London. During the First World War, he was the commanding officer of the medical subsection of the hospitals. He was knighted in the 1948 Birthday Honours and KCVO in 1949. He was elected President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from 1946 to 1949 and President of the Royal Society of Medicine from 1954 to 1956.
