This was my platoon leader, Captain Vincent Murtaugh. He's passed now, but, 2004-5 he was the kind of badass leader combat engineers had no problem following. The kind that walked out and put charges on IED himself. A legend. RIP, sir.

Lutifiyah, Iraq. Late 2004. Marines utilized my Meerkat for some ops. It was a sketchy place and they lived rough as hell, part of the 2nd MEU headqaurtered at the old chicken farm near Mahmadiyah. Also got screamed at by a gunny and I can say that was not a great experience.
This thing here was my sweet chariot of doom, the Meerkat, part of the IVMMD system the army threw at the IED problem. They decided it was too dangerous to use for humans and it's a robot now. I drove it all over the place. It's a mobile mine detector.
Our C-IED teams were constantly dealing with evolving IED threats on the ground back in '04. Designs from different makers were always... interesting. This example was easy to find (a lot were in those days). I believe it's the first homemade claymore we encountered. These days, the claymore chases you down, and I think that's far worse.
