Have you seen aphid mummies and wondered "what's going on inside?" Here's a pea aphid that has been mummified (dried/swollen) by the braconid parasitoid Aphidius ervi, right next to its unsuspecting compatriot. The chunky wasp larvae is moving inside the remaining aphid "husk."

Sound on! Only two miles from the house, beautiful sunset and geese moving around the valley this winter. Lucked out this flock flew directly at/over me after they got up several miles away.

Easter egg time. I put a little surprise in this metal bug (thank you for all the ♥️)...it has gears, and so do real bugs! So planthoppers...hop on plants. To make sure both their tiny legs jump simultaneously, they have GEARS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS. 1/2 paperpile.com/shared/IkGYt4

Echoing this from my own account too! Hopefully folks enjoyed seeing the beasties (tadpole shrimp) up close. I WAS told “they actually are kind of cute”.

Mostly clear skies on Wed provided an excellent view of the lower Sac River's flood control measures. #CAwx #CAwater Photo 1📷| Sutter Bypass ends at the Sac River, spills over Fremont Weir & into the Yolo Bypass. Photo 2 📷|✨Zoom, enhance✨ 🛰️Sentinel-2/European Spacy Agency

Amazing footage but horrible to see. Looks like a view over this area: maps.app.goo.gl/Nvxwbv3dm3T5…
Monterey County residents were advised to prepare for major roadways to be closed due to flooding between Thursday night and Sunday morning as flood-stage water flows move through the Salinas River to the coast. nbcbay.com/qVNpa2f

I’ve stood near this same corner on the west side of the Gonzales river bridge everyday this week and today the Salinas river is now flowing over the road, turning the nearby ag field into a lake..

The Tisdale Weir across the Sacramento River from 108 is now running. Several Weirs and Bypasses along the river provide relief during high water levels by rerouting excess water.

Our lygus trial in cotton is looking pretty good as we finish off the season. Challenging pest in CA cotton, so more tools are always needed.

We chat with grower Josh Sheppard about how harvest is coming along. Every acre of #carice harvested is jobs on the farm, with more work to be done at the dryers and mills. #sacvalley Listen here:

Had a great time presenting at the @ucanr Kearney REC Alfalfa and Forage Field Day. Lots of good (hopefully!) usable information for folks in attendance. I covered alfalfa weevil insecticide resistance. Dan Putnam shown here covering parts of the alfalfa plant/feed quality.

Some photos from farm advisor Nick Clark. I got him in front of my slides as he got things rolling for the indoor portion. Kudos for great work to the organizing team. Agenda is here (ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/pos…) to make sure you keep an eye out for it next year if you missed it.

I am always excited to see the fall green up after the first rains, although it definitely seems rather early this year!
