#THREESTRIKES SB 2079/HB 3380: IL is one of only a few states that imposes #LWOP on a person's third “strike.” When prosecutors seek a conviction, judges have no option but to hand down the punishment.
We're working to repeal IL's 3X law, returning discretion to judges!

#MSR SB 2077/HB 3378: Some offenses require folks to serve a period of MSR post-release, which comes with a slew of rules. Even rule violations like missing a PO appointment or curfew can result in re-incarceration.
We're working to end imprisonment for technical violations!

Mass incarceration’s toll on human dignity is no more apparent than with the staggering rise of life sentences; today one in seven imprisoned people is serving a life sentence.

ALT Graph showing the growth of life sentences from 1992 to 2020. In 1992, 9,404 people were reportedly serving life without parole and another 57,888 people had parole-eligible life sentences. By 2003, the number of people serving life without parole had more than tripled and parole eligible lifers had increased 62%. By 2020, six times as many people were serving life without parole, reaching an all-time high of 55,945; the total population of people serving life with parole rose 82% over these years.
