IPS becomes a University-level research institute within the @NUSingapore (NUS), effective from 1 April 2026. IPS will no longer sit within the @lkyspp (LKYSPP), where it has been a research centre since 2008. It will operate as an autonomous research institute within NUS, while maintaining its longstanding mission to analyse public policy, bridge thought leaders, and communicate research to a wide audience.

The third lecture of the 18th IPS-Nathan Lecture Series by Dr Shawn Lum, Senior Lecturer at the @ntu_ase, @NTUsg was held earlier today. Titled "Singapore, Nature and the Wider World", the lecture argued that protecting local nature without a larger regional effort is insufficient. Dr Lum warned that without firm ecological red lines, critical ecosystems could reach irreversible tipping points.

Dr Lum proposed that Singapore's influence in finance, diplomacy and education positions it uniquely to drive regional change, including Prof Tommy Koh's chairmanship of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Closing with a vision of a world reimagined, he called for holistic solutions integrating science with legal, social, economic and cultural approaches — and urged the audience never to forget the magic of nature.

The Question-and-Answer session, moderated by Dr Geh Min, Former President, Nature Society Singapore, explored the role Singapore could play on the global stage — including working with ASEAN neighbours, harnessing indigenous knowledge of the seas, and raising awareness ahead of the upcoming super El Niño. Participants also reflected on how communities can take greater ownership of green spaces, and how amplifying conservation success stories could inspire wider action.

✋ What drives someone to report something they see as "out of line", even when it causes no harm? 🎨 The removal of pavement art outside Mountbatten MRT station by SMRT staff sparked discussion on the tension between artistic creativity, free expression and the rules governing shared spaces in Singapore.

He explores the psychology behind the reporting of behaviour perceived as rule-breaking, even when no harm is done. With growing support for community-led actions in shared spaces, he also weighs in on whether Singaporeans are becoming more tolerant of a little disorder, so long as it appears harmless or creative.

🌿 Singapore is small — but could our impact on global biodiversity be far greater than we imagine? Dr Shawn Lum, IPS’ 18th S R Nathan Fellow and Senior Lecturer at @NTUsg Asian School of the Environment, delivers his final lecture, “Singapore, Nature and the Wider World”, in the series “Singapore, Nature and a World Reimagined”. Home to species found nowhere else on Earth and among the last refuges for critically endangered animals, Singapore may hold more sway over the future of nature than we realise — within our shores and far beyond. How can we help secure a future for wondrous biodiversity, life-giving ecosystems, and humanity itself? Moderated by Dr Geh Min, Former President, Nature Society. 🎟️ Sign up: bit.ly/SL16JUNPHYSICAL 📺 Watch live on IPS’ Facebook: facebook.com/instituteofpoli… 🌳 More on the series: tinyurl.com/45w4zccj

🏠 What does public housing really mean to Singaporeans? At the IREUS Urban Housing Symposium 2026, IPS' Christopher Gee highlighted that HDB flats serve four roles for Singaporeans at once: a home, a citizenship milestone, a retirement safety net, and a financial asset.

But these intertwined goals will be severely tested when the Voluntary Early Redevelopment Scheme (VERS) begins its first exercises, calling for residents to reveal which objective they prioritise, and to reconcile tensions between objectives.

He added that the compensation frameworks and consent thresholds established in these first exercises will set precedents that shape subsequent redevelopment for decades, making it critical for the design of VERS be carefully thought through. Read more here: tinyurl.com/3py45srj

Singapore has made remarkable progress, with income inequality declining to its lowest level in decades. Yet, wealth remains concentrated at the top. In this commentary for @straits_times, IPS’ Wilson Goh and Wong Kang Li argue that it is time to explore “shared capitalism” — giving workers a greater stake in the businesses they help grow. CPF savings and home equity have already provided a foundation for relatively stable wealth ownership. The next challenge is to build a nation of co-owners by doing what we do best: starting small, learning fast, and scaling what works. Read more here: tinyurl.com/u3ebst94
