The Jobs Report for May shows higher-than-expected job gains, but some concerning trends still lurk beneath those big numbers—along with signs that the fruits of economic growth are not evenly distributed.    Hear more about this week’s report from IWPR’s Dr. Kate Bahn.

The Trump administration wants science to follow the president’s priorities — not the facts. OMB has proposed a rule that would cement the administration’s political control over research grants, putting key decisions in the hands of political appointees instead of actual experts. Research and science should be backed by peer review — not political interference. eenews.net/articles/trump-ta…

As #SexEdForAll Month draws to a close, we know that all students deserve inclusive and accurate information. Yet only 15% of community college students report having received comprehensive sex ed. They’re also less likely to have access to sexual health resources than peers at four-year colleges—and 17 out of 20 are concerned about their school’s lack of resources. Earlier this month, VA Gov. Spanberger vetoed a bill that would require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for workers experiencing menopause and perimenopause-related symptoms. Despite impacting half the workforce, menopause is largely unaddressed in workplaces, forcing most women to work through related symptoms. The Trump administration’s new “moms.gov” website isn’t actually about helping women and families—it’s about pushing pronatalist propaganda and misinformation. Here are four ways to support parents’ health and well-being (and none of them include referring to women as “underbabied.”) iwpr.org/here-are-four-bette…

If you’re skeptical that promoting anti-abortion hate groups, pushing harmful pseudoscience, and fearmongering about “underbabied” women is going to help women and families...so are we. Here are four ways the Trump administration and Congress could actually support new or expecting parents: iwpr.org/here-are-four-bette…

$1 trillion. That’s the value of all the unpaid care work—overwhelmingly provided by women and mothers—in the US in 2024. As we fight for policies that would give them the support they need to both provide for their loved ones and ensure their own economic well-being, IWPR honors the caregivers and mothers who provide the care that holds families—and our society—together. #HappyMothersDay iwpr.org/unseen-efforts-disp…

Hundreds of pregnancy-related deaths occur in the U.S. every year. And almost 9 in 10 of those deaths were preventable. Yesterday, IWPR’s Jesseca Boyer joined Maternal and Child Health Appropriations Alliance partners on Capitol Hill to call on Congress to provide crucial and robust funding for maternal and child health. #MCHAAforMothersDay

This month’s jobs reports shows continued economic instability for Black women, who saw an increase in their unemployment rate to 6.5%. Adding to the potential instability for all workers, job growth continues to be dominated by only a few industries, and the number of discouraged workers—those who have given up trying to find a job—has increased over the last year. Read our recent report on Black women’s disproportionate job losses: iwpr.org/one-year-into-trump…

The unpaid care work undertaken by parents, extended family, and community members is the invisible infrastructure of our economy. But being able to take the time to care for loved ones has quietly become a luxury for some—and an enormous financial and professional expense for many: iwpr.org/burden-and-privileg…

BREAKING NEWS: The Supreme Court has temporarily restored broad access to mifepristone, following a lower court’s recent ruling restricting access to in-person dispensing of the pill used for medication abortion. The gender wage gap widened two years in a row. IWPR’s Dr. Kate Bahn breaks down the causes of this troubling reversal of progress: “What we saw two years ago was men and women both had growing wages, but men’s wages just grew more than women’s. But last year, men’s wages increased, and women’s did not at all. This also coincides with the fact that the US is the only advanced economy that has had a declining female labor force participation rate since the year 2000. “All these factors economists predict are caused by the lack of supports that let a woman fully engage in the labor market.” Watch/listen: youtube.com/live/l2GCzuvPH-s…

IWPR’s Dr. Kate Bahn on the experience of families grappling with ever-increasing costs of necessities like child care and housing: "Those families have less space to navigate something like an over 20% monthly increase to gasoline prices. So we’re seeing a much less dynamic labor market, which gives workers less leverage to ask for higher wages—right as they’re facing higher costs for necessities. So they’re really backed into a corner, and it’s unsustainable for families." Learn more about how the state of the economy is affecting workers: youtube.com/live/l2GCzuvPH-s
