$132 million. That's how much freight commodity value crosses the Interstate Bridge every day—even with many trucks getting caught up in traffic bottlenecks. A replacement bridge that improves safety and addresses congestion is crucial for our regional and national economies.

The aging Interstate Bridge uses 6.5 miles of cabling for its lift system, which is coated with a thick layer of grease that must be reapplied annually. Crews work every year to oil and then grease the cables—which are used to raise and lower the bridge spans— by hand. [1/2]

With a new fixed-span bridge, we won’t have cables to grease or a deck to lift 100s of times per year, saving maintenance time. [2/2]

Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections that provide drivers with time and space to merge and exit safely. Improvements like these will enable more efficient vehicle movement and reduce the likelihood of crashes on the Interstate Bridge. youtube.com/watch?v=edNXrvcv…

The aging Interstate Bridge wasn't designed to withstand earthquakes. A replacement bridge will keep this vital crossing over the Columbia River operational, allowing travelers, communities and emergency services to access the bridge in the event of a significant seismic event.

Public transit on I-5 currently gets stuck in the same congestion (and bridge lifts) as cars and trucks. Increased transit service across a new fixed-span bridge will be part of a multimodal solution that improves access, connectivity and reliability for travelers.
