The industry waited weeks for estimates. AI makes it happen in hours. In my last post, I spoke about how creating a BOQ can take days or even weeks - because estimation is still a manual, coordination-heavy process. So we asked a simple question: What if drawings could directly become estimates? That question led us to build the Estimation AI Agent at Powerplay. Here’s what it does simply (as shown in the video here): Upload drawings → The system reads them → Extracts quantities → Builds the BOQ → Applies cost data → Generates a ready-to-bid estimate What used to require multiple handoffs, spreadsheets, and follow-ups can now happen in hours. Across our beta customers, we are seeing: - 95% reduction in estimation time - Faster bid submissions - Shorter sales cycles - Better alignment between estimated and actual costs Importantly, this is not automation without oversight. Every estimate still includes a human in the loop - reviewing assumptions, validating outputs, and ensuring the final numbers reflect real project context. This is just the first of several agents we’ve built. In the coming weeks, I’ll share how we’re applying the same approach to other agents in the procurement life-cycle of the construction business.

Weeks of pre-construction work can now be done in hours. In a typical construction project, 70-80% of the total cost sits inside procurement. Involving estimation, material selection, vendors, inventory, rates, buying decisions. Over exceeding procurement spend is the biggest reason why margins are lost. That’s why we built Procurement AI - a system of agents that does end-to-end procurement for your construction projects. In the next few posts I will cover these AI agents - starting with Estimation. Estimation agent answers a basic question: What is the project going to cost? Projects don’t start on site. They start with a drawing. From which you make a Bill of Quantities(BOQ). A set of drawings arrives from the client. Many times incomplete. Sometimes revised multiple times. An estimation engineer starts reviewing them sheet by sheet. Quantities are extracted manually. Specifications are cross-checked. Rates are pulled from old spreadsheets or past projects. Existing inventory prices are checked. Vendors are called to confirm current prices. Revisions come in, and parts of the BOQ have to be rebuilt again. This process repeats. Across teams, versions, and days. That is why creating a final BOQ can take days or even weeks, not just because the workflow is heavy, fragmented, and dependent on a few experienced people and their memory.
